our kids have been fascinated by bats for a long time! when we were in australia earlier this year, we were able to watch this huge cloud of bats for several nights on hamilton island as they’d wake up and leave the trees, and then watch them fly around catching insects with the moon as their backdrop....Read more
sharing a few photos today that we snapped early in the morning last week as we walked eleanor to her first day of kindergarten!!! she was so excited, she was almost skipping at one point. i held back my tears and put on my brave face inspired by her brave face, and off we went. it’s been a little touch and go since that first morning, sometimes she speaks so fast and excitedly about something at school while other moments she lets me know she doesn’t like school and doesn’t plan on going back. ...Read more
she turns 5 today, and with this big milestone, comes all the feelings. for all of us. including eleanor. before bed last night, she professed, i don’t want to turn five! followed quickly with i just want to be twenty! i don’t know where that comment stemmed from, but when she tried to pout as she said it by folding her arms across her chest dramatically as her nose wrinkled up just a bit while she squinted her eyes and furrowed her brow, i noticed all her new found freckles from the australian sun spread across her tiny cheeks and wrinkled nose, and it was like i saw a grown version of her… maybe an eight year old version, maybe a little bit of a twelve year old version, or even a twenty year old version… and while it scared the living daylight out of me, it was also just a little bit endearing....Read more

now, this is a big deal because my sweet eleanor usually isn’t super big on pink, anything frilly or princess-y and when dressing herself, always chooses some sort of variation on pajamas....Read more
i gave eleanor and samson each a disposable camera last month and taught them how to turn it on and press “click.” i told them to use the camera whenever they’d like, when they saw a moment they wanted to remember or something that made them feel something. they were pretty ecstatic about it! a few summers ago we did this with eleanor, but we let her use my diana mini camera and unfortunately at the end of the summer, once all the film was completely used, she figured out how to open the back of the camera and unwound all the precious film… so nothing came of those pictures....Read more
