After 7 paint samples splashed all over the walls, still wasn’t sure but just went for it anyway. Trying to do that more in lots of areas of life. She’s sometimes blue and sometimes green depending on her mood (or more how the light hits). I love her already. 💕🎨 #paint #homerenovation (color is green apple by Behr🍏)

On the last day of 2020, we ate take-out deep-dish

On the last day of 2020, we ate take-out deep-dish pizza for dinner picnic-style on the floor of our kitchen and introduced Madalena and Beatrice to their first cups of sparkling apple cider. “You like it, mom? It’s too spicy for you, mom?” Beatrice said as she casually stole my cup once hers ran low. She is my only child who calls me “mom” instead of “mama,” and I swear in this moment I caught a glimpse of her future adult self and I’m still a little bit shook.⠀

We lit sparklers after the sun went down and shouted into the dark sky “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” with so much excitement and conviction, you may have confused our 7pm New Year’s Eve party situation for more of a stroke-of-midnight-affair.⠀

During our last meal of 2020, we discussed together a new family word for the coming year, and settled on Grateful, a suggestion made by all three of our oldest children. The kids practiced making toasts as we solidified the new word, some toasts airing sillier, others surprisingly profound. After all, these kids (and all kids right now) have had quite the year, and I’m not sure we’ve given them enough credit for the impressive ways in which they’ve handled it.⠀

I hold a lot of hope for the coming year. No big resolutions or massive goals set over here, but a prayer of gratitude for the lessons 2020 brought, for the big changes I’m doing my best to lean into and for the renewed sense of priorities the last many months brought my way. Looking forward to carrying a full heart of gratitude into 2021 with clearer intention and stronger commitment to my family, my community, and myself.⠀

Decided to get a little wild for the last afternoo

Decided to get a little wild for the last afternoon of 2020 by starting a paint project without a drop cloth or a single piece of painters tape😎🤪🥳 I mean— sometimes you just have to show the freaking year who is boss, right?! Happy new year, folks!

Felt a little bit like a Christmas miracle— fiii

Felt a little bit like a Christmas miracle— fiiiiiinally getting into the living room on Christmas Eve night to put up the big tree and all her bright lights and merry ornaments! ✨ (the room has been taped off for dry wall and sanding and we had wet concrete blocking its entry way until last night!). The kids were such good sports patiently waiting for this moment. We listened to Ella Fitzgerald’s Christmas album and ate the last of the ginger cookies we’d made earlier in the day thanks to kind friends who let us borrow their kitchen for the morning. It felt different but same in many ways. After the kids went down for the night, I stood there in front of our glowing tree soaking her in until she became a foggy blur of colored lights thanks to my waterworks. What a year. I think we’ll keep her up and sparkling well into April. Merry Christmas, friends! 🎄 PS— What color would you paint this room?! I wanted to paint her blue—ceilings and brick wall and built-in-book-shelves, too!— but I’m a little bit on the fence about the blue tonight. Any suggestions?....

What are your favorite gifts that are more like non-gifts but feel like the best kind of gifts? 🎁 (Sharing a few below...) ⁣

Josh and I spent a good while last night going through our Christmas game plan before any last minute shipping windows close soon💆🏻‍♀️ I felt frazzled trying to remember what I’ve already ordered, where anything even is that’s arrived (hey renovation!), and also just that mom weight on my shoulders of wanting to give my kids the freaking world but also stay within a budget but also it’s Christmas but also not spoil them💆🏻‍♀️💆🏻‍♀️

Our family has often tried to prioritize experiences, adventures and time together over tangible things that don’t last as long, and when I sit down and actually think about the gifts that have meant the most to me over the years, time set aside with my people doing something together, or an act of service presented by a loved one, always takes the cake. ⁣
⁣
A few of my favorites that would make a great gift 💝
—One on one dates with my kids. ⁣
—Cooking something together in the kitchen, just us, after the house is asleep and everything is quiet. ⁣
—A mini dance party, where everyone gets to DJ one song. ⁣
—A game night. ⁣
—A baking session. ⁣
—Writing song lyrics with my kids (or rewriting Hamilton lyrics to fit our current situation). ⁣
—Trying a new food together (have napkins and bucket nearby lol). ⁣
—An at-home movie night with homemade popcorn. (Even better, bust out the oldie videos of the family, like births and first Christmases). ⁣
—A family bike ride or a bike ride just us.⁣
—Attending a service project together. ⁣
—Hosting a tea party, stuffed animals invited. ⁣
—A handwritten letter received in the mail, just because. ⁣

An oldie from once upon a time when it was a first

An oldie from once upon a time when it was a first Christmas and Josh had no beard and I could wear lipstick (I miss that). We talked so much in those first few Christmases about what kinds of traditions we wanted to create for our hopeful future family and home full of little ones someday. It feels like yesterday at times but mostly it feels like a million years ago. It was complete magic way back then but as we dreamed together of what it’d look like in years to come, I don’t think either one of us had any idea just how magical it would someday be, too— with messes and moves, toddlers belting Jingle Bells and asking for pink horses from Santa. With older kiddos quoting Elf verbatim and slowly grasping the truer meaning of Christmas over the Amazon wish lists and monster sized toy store aisles. With a hot debate every 11 months about putting up the tree before December 1st and then baking Josh’s super-secret-ginger-cookies-recipe roughly 24 days later until we can’t possibly imagine eating another ginger cookie until a solid 365 days pass. When you thought it was as good as it gets but they were right, it just keeps getting better and better. Merry Christmas!🎄🎁 🍪
