decorating for christmas!

the most wonderful time of the year is here! we decorated for christmas the day after thanksgiving this year and made a little video, too! it was very sweet to see how excited all three of the kids were for our little christmas trees and i just love getting a chance to create traditions together based around the season.

i introduced eleanor and samson to the movie home alone after we decorated the trees while conrad napped, and that is hopefully going to remain tradition from here on out. it was something we did at my home growing up on thanksgiving night so it was fun to introduce the movie this year.  my kids love their slap stick comedy as much as their mama and it makes me very very proud. i forgot how much bad language there is in that movie (not the worst, but words they hadn’t heard yet that i was hoping they wouldn’t hear for a few more years still like “jerk,” “crap,” “hell,” etc. etc. gosh! the worst was when samson said later in the day, “merry christmas, you filthy animal!” and i was like, “WHOOPS.”) so we had to have a little chat about all of that afterwards, but anyway, i still love that movie so much and we maybe even watched home alone 2 the following day before bed.

see the VLOG below:

what are some of the traditions you guys do to get into the holiday spirit? also, can i end every single post for the next few weeks with MERRY CHRISTMAS and get away with it?! ;)

  1. carly

We decorate on Thanksgiving night and black Friday too! It’s a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season. We also open our first present, christmas PJs, on black friday and wear them while we decorate.

You guys look like you had a great time! Love the addition of the santa hats. Your kiddos have the best smiles……

    merry christmas, cute fam!

    xo, brittany
i’ve got a montessori christmas craft on my blog today!

    Have a lovely holidays !

    Love from Paris

  4. In case you need a future one *wink, wink*

  5. Erin

Laughing out loud about the “Merry Christmas you filthy animal” haha
    I love that movie!

  6. Sabine

My favorite tradition is our sleeping under the Christmas tree pyjama party. 🌲🌲🌲

  7. Mollie

I loved watching this video! I have been following your blog since you were pregnant with Eleanor, so it’s crazy to see how much your family has expanded! It looks like you all are always having a great time. :)

    xoxo Mollie

  8. Lauren

I remember watching Home Alone as a kid on TV so all the swear words were cut out – except for “jerk.” I remember Kevin calling his uncle a jerk and thinking that was totally scandalous!

  9. Victoria

Haha oh Samson! That’s too cute and funny. :)

  10. Lindy

Hey! I loved both your’s and Eleanor’s sweaters. Where are they from?

  11. Katie F.

OMG, my kiddo is already obsessed with your Scottsdale video from last year because of the jingle bells song. She will lose her mind over your kid singing it again! Happy holidays!

  12. Lori

Of course you can! Merry Christmas!!!

  13. Lindsey

We love to watch movies as well, but don’t love the bad language, violence, inappropriate scenes, etc. There are 2 great ways to make sure that you get the most out of the movie/TV show without the above: Clearplay (Blue-ray player with a filter stick that you can update with new movies for a monthly fee of $7.99) and VidAngel (streaming service where you purchase movie “credits” of $20 and then are charged a $1/day fee for your rental, which you return when done). Both allow you to manage the filter strength, but we like VidAngel best due to the streaming ability, cost, selection, and details regarding the filtered material that you can turn on/off (ex: wouldn’t see much of movies like Star Wars with all the filters engaged). We have Roku and use the VidAngel filter there. Hope this helps and let me know if you need more info! Merry Christmas!

Your tree looks amazing and everyone looks so jolly! My husband and I love traditions, too. One of ours is a yearly ornament. Every year we pick out an ornament that symbolizes the biggest thing that happened in our lives that year and then we scribble on the year. The best part is reviewing our growing collection :) | A Lifestyle Dog Blog

  15. Bren

Your kids were having so much fun!We decorated the week before Thanksgiving. Our granddaughter is at the age of understanding the concept of Santa and I want to enjoy every second I can with her. I think this will be a tradition. Btw, where did you get that fun tree skirt?
    Definitely end with Merry Christmas!

  16. I think from the Friday after Thanksgiving to December 26th it is fine to end any conversation with “Merry Christmas!”

We have a crazy amount of Christmas traditions. It starts with cutting down our tree on the Friday after Thanksgiving. We use our favorite children’s bible to create our own advent countdown. We also make gingerbread houses, drive around to pick our our favorite light display, open pjs on Christmas Eve, etc. We are little bit Christmas and tradition crazy in our household.

  17. Elishia

Adorable!!! My husband always made me wait until December 1st otherwise I’d go totally nuts in the run up and I accepted it as that is the day we first met (and then together ever since). So, watching your video has just made me feel extra festive and I can’t wait until Thursday (however, I do have a job interview…).

    Thanks for the festive cheer!

  18. Katie

Was the “future one’ stocking an easter egg?! Either way I love your videos – Merry Christmas!!

  19. Sometimes I forget how young they are and that they may not have seen classics like Home Alone until now! Some of my favourites (including Home Alone) are Elf and Arthur Christmas! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  20. Yesssss the most magical time of year! We got our tree and decorated the apartment the weekend after Thanksgiving too. It makes me so unbelievably happy to see it lit up at night. Already working on my seasonal bucket list. Christmas, commence!

  21. Emma

Hello Naomi, where your slipper come from ?

  22. Oh I’m sorry but I couldn’t help but laugh when I read Samson said Merry Christmas ya filthy animal! I don’t have children but still watch all the classic Christmas films (all the kid movies forever ha!) and the language just goes over my head as an adult so can imagine that must be a little stressful for you! Arthur Christmas is a good one, I just watched it the other day :)

Your tree looks lovely, the kids did a grand job!

  23. I love it! I will be on full Christmas mode come tomorrow ;) I’m talking red cups, christmas pjs, glasgow & edinburgh christmas markets, christmas films & music and wrapping presents! This is the best time of year!

  24. Rose J.

Look how cute your kids are getting, and how well they speak! Wow! such a little woman, and gentleman Eleanor and Samson are.

Traditions are a fave of mine especially since I didn’t have any when I was a growing up. I definitely changed that when I had a family of my own. ON the day after thanksgiving the kids decorate the little tree we’ve had for like 17 years, and we just started buying a real tree three years ago! If I lived in the city, I’m not sure about having a real tree, but we have enjoyed having the smell of a real tree in our home. And we loving going into the city to see Christmas everywhere. including taking the kids to see santa whether it’s macys, or the plaza, Ever since we moved here 10 years we’ve been taking on NYC, and we love it! There’s so much to do and see in the east when it comes to Christmas, and building traditions is so much fun! No matter how old our kids get!

    Take care, and Merry christmas!

  25. Ally

We watched Home Alone with our 4 year old for the first time on Black Friday too! I LOVE that movie but also had forgotten about the language, thankfully none of it has popped up around here, …yet!

I love reading all of the Christmas traditions, so fun!

  26. megan

All this Christmas spirit I’m seeing is the best!! We watch Christmas movies while decorating our home and on Christmas Eve I cook a big breakfast. I enjoy your blog so much and love how its centered around family.

  27. Amber

Hey Naomi! I’ve never commented before but I’ve been following your posts for about 6 years now! Haha I’m picking out some paint colors right now and I keep coming back to your green wall color. Do you happen to remember what color that is and where it’s from?

Thanks so much if you read this!

  28. We haven’t put up any of the main decorations yet (i.e., Christmas tree!) but I just recently went crazy at Michael’s and purchased a ton of smaller decorations and knick-knacks (for 50% off!). I bought both kids a mini Christmas tree with mini ornaments for them to put in their rooms. They LOVED them!

  29. hanna

Your family is too cute –Like Hanna

  30. Christine

Great video! Good to know my kids are not the only ones who color on the furniture, the walls, on everything but paper. Merry Christmas!

  31. Nikki

My 3 year old son is making me play your kiddos singing jingle bells over and over, and he’s asking if he can play with them. You sure made him happy! He has a current obsession with New York City (no idea why, we’ve never been) so when I explained that’s where your kids live he was very excited about it. They have a little fan over here.

Love your trees. My family doesn’t let me unleash Christmas on the house until after December 1st, so our tradition is to put the tree up on the first weekend in December. That’s this one coming up. Cannot wait!

Love your sweater, Naomi. Can you share where it is from?

  32. Rachel

You have to watch “Eloise at Christmas time” with them if you
Not already! It’s set in New York and THE cutest movie ever. ‘Subs even my favorite Christmas movie!
