our visit to san diego! (photos and a video!)

LOVE TAZA Fairmont1-2

i know i shared a bit on social media the other week about our time in san diego, but i finally got around to putting together a little video from our trip and also going through all the photos (brace yourselves, there are a lot!).  we feel so fortunate to get to be working with Fairmont Hotels and Resorts right now, and loved getting to check out their property at Fairmont Grand Del Mar in san diego. you’ll notice from the photos and videos that the property is truly spectacular. it has this old world charm, with the most beautiful mediterranean aesthetic and design. i felt like i was in italy or france walking down some of those beautiful tiled corridors, which of course made it feel extra special and fun. a really magnificent place.

a little video we made:

a few highlights and favorite things we saw, ate and enjoyed below!

LOVE TAZA Fairmont4-3

we enjoyed a picnic dinner and game of bocce one evening on the back lawn. the kids had so much fun playing bocce, we might need to invest in our own set and play a few games this summer in central park. (also, a million thank you’s to the man walking by seeing me taking photos and offering to take a few so i could hop in the frame with the family!)

LOVE TAZA Fairmont4-2

by the end of the evening, these two were bocce professionals!

LOVE TAZA Fairmont5-7

i spy with my little eye, JOSH!

when we forget to pack our floaties and are just a tad bit behind in the learning to swim department (city kids), we all pile onto mom and i get to be the floaty.

we had such a great meal at the cottage while in la jolla! the crab cake sandwich (which isn’t on the menu, but the waitress told us about it) was amazing. also, the scones. so.good.

the beach might be considered chilly to californians this time of year, but since we’ve had to pull the coats back out in new york this week, 60 degrees felt like beach weather to us! we were all over it!

a few other highlights from our time in san diego:

mentioned above, but we loved our meal at the cottage. we also ventured over to point loma seafoods one evening which was really tasty and a fun experience.  we tried out phil’s bbq and also loved visiting el prado while at balboa park.

  1. Megan

The Grand del Mar is absolutely incredible! My husband and I went there on our honeymoon and your little video brought back so many fun memories. It’s definitely renewed my hope to be able to return someday!! What a fun trip!

  2. Anne

I love these pictures. Looks like you had the best time. Can you bring next time you leave for vacation? ;)

  3. Tammy

this hotel looks amazing! i find it so fascinating when animals are albino- they look like a totally different breed and are so stunning!

  4. Mia

I’ve never seen you shorts! Also, where did you get the over-sized patterned dress? Adore.

  5. Heidi

Where is your yellow dress from?

  6. Sarah

Love your blog — I’ve been following quietly for years. However, I really think you should take the photo of you with the sea lions at the Children’s Pool off of your blog. That is a highly contested and politicized site: humans were never supposed to go down there and would quietly observe from the viewpoint up above. A few years ago, a few people decided that the de facto practice was not in fact illegal, and decided to go down to the beach. This has been causing a lot of harm and ecological distress for the sea mammals that have called it a safe place to rest and give birth (for example, see this: http://www.examiner.com/article/human-gawkers-causing-stressed-seal-moms-to-miscarry-pups-at-casa-beach).

The Marine Mammal Protection Act has failed to protect these amazing animals. I know there was no malintent on your part, but you draw the wrong kind of publicity to the Children’s Pool. Let’s keep these amazing mammals safe.

  7. Rosemary M

Oh, your children are sweet as can be..I never tire of seeing pictures of them out and about, enjoying life! Mine are 18 and 25, and your blog always reminds me how sweet life is when you’re living it with small children!

  8. Conrad at the end is really the cutest! :D And the entire video is so beautiful, as always!

  9. Absolutely love San Diego! The zoo is (arguably) the best zoo in the country. You should definitely try a “San Diego” burrito…it has french fries in it! :)

    xx, Hannah

So many beautiful memories! Your videos are always seriously so adorable!

  17. Sarah

Gorgeous ! If you want to get your kids swimming, check out Imagine – they have locations all over the city. My almost 3 year old is close to being able to swim on her own, which I never would have thought possible. So important for safety– plus she has a blast every week.

    • TAZA

thank you! we will look into it! so exciting to hear!

  18. Such great photos! Naomi where did you get that beautiful dress you are wearing at the beach?

    -Mhairi :)

    • TAZA

thank you! i found it while we were in australia. it’s by gorman clothing!

  19. Sara

Hi Naomi, once again I am blown away by your photos! That first shot of your whole family is so beautiful! What lens did you guys use for these?

    • TAZA

thanks sarah! we shot with our 24-70mm lens and also our 85mm portrait lens a few times!

  20. Ariella

Looks like it was so much fun! This is probably a super weird thing to ask but are you guys selling your toddler beds now that you switched to bunk beds? IKEA changed the design and the new minnen beds are not so cute. We live on the west side and when I saw you switched out the nursery I had to ask, would love to find these beds in the original design.

    • TAZA

i actually gave them away to a few girlfriends when we got our bunkbeds! they were from land of nod though, not sure if they still have them, but they were great!

  21. Jay

You and your family are beautiful! The Internet can be such a negative place, but seeing your happy, bright photos always brings a smile to this reader’s heart.

    • TAZA

thank you so much, jay! this comment meant so much to me! i appreciate it!

  22. Becka

What is the song playing in the video? And what is everyone wearing?? :)

  24. Elizabeth

I grew up right up the street from the Grand and your video and pictures brought back so many great memories! Makes me miss home :) So glad you guys had such a wonderful time, you seem to have hit a lot of the best spots!

  25. Brooklynne

Love your black choker! Where is it from?

    • TAZA

      thanks! it’s from ASOS!

  26. Molly

Cute shift dress and co-ord! Where are they from?

  27. Karen

I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed following your family for the last few years. My kids are almost exactly the same age as yours- I have a 5 year old daughter, 3 1/2 year old son (born 2 weeks after Samson), and a 1 year old son (born 1 day after Conrad). Not only that, my husband comes from a strong background of music (piano and violin) and I used to be a dancer (though never as skilled as you!). It has been amazing seeing the parallels in our pregnancies and children, and your blog has always been a source of inspiration and support. Sure things are crazy, but you make it look so beautiful and fun, and isn’t that exactly what childhood should be about? Thanks for sharing your world with us!

  28. Sarah

I just love your family videos. Do you mind sharing what camera you use?

  29. Cute video! What to you use to edit it? iMovie?

    • TAZA

hi molly! i used final cut pro to edit this video!

  30. Your family is so cute & inspiring! I’ve loved following your journey over the years. Much love!?

  31. Sarah

I love conrad’s swim trunks! It’s so hard to find ones for little boys that don’t go so far down past their knees. Do you mind sharing where you found his? Thanks!

  32. Sara

Your post is so timely because we just looked into a staycation here for our anniversary at the end of May, however, the link at the end of your post shows rooms $50 more than when I went directly to their site to book a room. I’m hoping it’s an error on their end because we’d love a free room upgrade!

    • TAZA

hi sara! oh shoot, so sorry to hear you’re having that kind of trouble with the link. very strange. i’ll pass on your feedback to fairmont so they can check it on their end!

  33. Jessica

So adorable as always! I was in SD the day before you all left–I would’ve been stoked to bump into you!

Can you share where your hat is from?!

  34. Shannon

You and Josh amaze me. As a mother of two toddlers I sometimes wear Pj’s all day, and not like the cute ones you wear, holes, stains you name it! I don’t know how you two wear white so much! Very jealous!

  35. Shirlyn

I love all of your photos-so full of zest and colors! Fairmont Grand Del Mar is soooo pretty and grand, and I agree it can be easily mistaken for an estate in France. Your outfits are gorgeous, especially that floral dress, and gray sweater in photo 11. Is the latter from Anthropologie?

  36. Eve

Love the photos! Where did you get Eleanor’s green suspenders dress from? It’s so cute!!

  37. Abbey

I couldn’t find a way to email you personally, but I just wanted to say a quick thank you. I am 21 and have been following your blog for a few years now, and I am so proud of all that you have done and for the constant good example that you set for others. You inspire many people for many reasons. Thanks for sticking to your standards, it really means a lot!

  38. Jane

I love everything about this post – from your outfits to every single minutiae of that video. I spent my 25th birthday in San Diego, and I had the most amazing & authentic fish & shrimp tacos there. It’s definitely a wonderful city. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

  39. It’s looks amazings. I would like to be there. Kisses from France

  40. Jennie

cute blog post! i love the song in the video!
what is the song called? thanks taza!
    you’re such an example!

  41. Laura

Beautiful photos. Love how you guys record your family memories. Also loving that you’re making videos on Youtube ?

  42. Sabine

I love the video and pics and following your family’s adventures! ;-)
Since you are all hat lovers like us, I was wondering if you have a good suggestion on how to pack more than one hat? I mean I am wearing one in the plane, but I wish I had a good solution on bringing more in my luggage.

    • TAZA

hey sabine! if i’m packing more than one hat in my suitcase, i’ll stick one inside the other and then stuff the inside with some soft clothing. then i’m sure to pack it in the middle of my bag, and tightly around it, to keep its shape! hope that helps!

  43. Mel

Loved it! Also, not trying to play favorites at all, but Conrad pretty much stole this post, he is just adorable….and the rolls omg cuteness

  44. Pam

Love the video, great idea! Y’all are so adorable! Thanks for sharing.
