kangaroos, koalas and pythons, oh my!

spending an afternoon with koalas, kangaroos, baby alligators and a python was the biggest treat! we try to make an effort to have fun and educational experiences with our kids and spend time to learn about the rules, circumstances, and views on visiting animals like these. we chose to visit the australian reptile park which we found via the australian koala foundation (savethekoala.com) which is working hard to help the koalas and raise awareness about habitat destruction. we went while we were in sydney with friends and i wanted to plant myself beside that eucalyptus tree and never leave. they were just so soft and adorable. eleanor and samson were mostly intrigued by the python (brave souls!) but conrad was all about the koala just like his mama. :)

did you know that koalas sleep 18 hours a day?! sign me up for a koala life, somebody! please!!!

he couldn’t get enough of him, just like me. i kept being nervous he might hit the koala out of excitement, so i tried to hold his arm. he kept making his deep laughing sound which is totally the sound samson used to make around this age. oh my gosh, it’s so fun seeing the similarities as he’s getting bigger.

how beautiful is this tortoise?!

playing archaeologist in the sand box!

samson’s face in this top photo!!!! you guys, i don’t know how they were so comfortable climbing right up to the snake and holding him. i really didn’t love this portion of the afternoon.

but proud of them in a weird way for not being afraid?! i don’t know, part of me actually wouldn’t mind if they hated snakes as much as i do though.

they must get it from this guy.

KOALA-15 KOALA-17KOALA-16 and when a few kangaroos are just nonchalantly walking around the property, we all were making faces like samson’s in the photo above. i mean, how can you not?! sadly, didn’t see any baby kangaroos inside their mamas’ pouches, but being this close to an actual kangaroo was plenty. :)

ME: sonnet james reese dress + hat, troi ollivierre lipstick shade. kids are wearing teva’s sandals and little fedora’s from crewcuts.

I see you really had fun :) And you look all so cute with the hats – I like it so much as I’m a huge hat lover! Thanks for sharing the adorable pictures <3
    xx from Bavaria/Germany, Rena

  2. Marian

What an amazing trip you all had down under! Looks like you really packed in the adventures!! I’m totally with you on constrictors versus koalas, koalas every time! No contest. :)
Look forward to seeing more of your family adventures xx

  3. I love kangaroos! We were once driving in Australia and one started hopping along the side of the road with us, and it was matching us for speed! It was amazing but I was so scared it would hop in front of us. Love your photos, Samson’s face in them is priceless :)

  4. S & E are super brave..I would cringe at the sight of the snake. Koala’s on the other hand I would love.

I turn 30 next year and am hoping to make a trip to Australia as a big gift to myself! Looks like you had an amazing trip!

  5. That snake = my worst nightmare. You couldn’t pay me enough money to get close to a snake that big, I get shivers just thinking about it!! Your kids are so brave. Looks like an amazing time, Australia is at the top of my must visit list!

  6. Mindy

What an amazing trip! I love S & E holding the snake! My son would have done the same… but, my daughter would have been all about the koalas. Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing.

  7. Tammy

so jealous of this australia trip! conrad + the koalas are just too cute together

  8. Mara

That snake!!!!!! I’d be freeeeaking out.

  9. Oh my gosh those Koalas look fake! So cool!

  10. Isabel

Looks like your kids loved meeting all the animals. FYI I’m pretty sure that boa constrictors or alligators do not live in Australia but pythons and crocodiles do!

  11. Sarah

I can’t get over these pictures! The kiddos are SO cute with that snake, and I don’t even like snakes!! Thanks for sharing with us!

Ahhhhh I love the koala’s, they would’ve hated me I would’ve had to hold one lol

  13. Rachel

Holy moly! That snake would scare me to death! My daughter would be in heaven though. Looks like you guys had such a fun time. :)

No way could I hold a snake as calmly as that, I’d be freaking out! That kola on the other hand…so cute! What an amazing experience. :)

  15. Mollie

That snake is terrifying! What brave children you have! I would have spent most of my time near the koala. Looks like you all had fun :)

    xoxo Mollie

Oh Naomi, every time I read about your amazing experiences with your lovely family, all I want to do is just to make a family of my own and explore the world with them.

You always make family life seem so amazing. As a reader looking at the life you live with three kids and a great husband inspires me in so many ways.

I love how you always are out and about, exploring everything whether it is in NYC or somewhere else. I want to live that life with my future family as well.

You make everything with kids seem possible, and for that you are a great admiration of mine. So thankyou for showing life is about fun and adventures (and of course also all the everyday stuff), I hope I can be that mother one day!

  17. Rachel

I’d take the snake over a tarantula any day!!
Love how much all your littkes seemed to enjoy themselves!!

And you are working that tan!! ;)

I have always said that I would have no problem holding a snake, but I am curious what would happen once I actually was able to!

These pictures show exactly what I experienced with my younger sisters, being that life is just so exciting again with young ones because they truly are so thrilled in their new discoveries and you can’t help but feel the same way!

  19. love this, we went to the zoo today! i could hardly handle the snakes behind the glass.. i can’t believe your kids were that comfortable!

  20. Katrina

I am a sucker for giant tortoises. But that snake…your kids and hubby are brave.

  21. tara

Your little family is just the cutest thing I have ever seen! I can’t believe the kids weren’t afraid to hold that HUGE python! What a great experience seeing those exotic animals must have been ;)
    Xo, Tara

  22. Jane

You and your family are all so brave! I would rather die than touch an alligator and a snake. But I would pay to hold a koala and meet a kangaroo anytime! <3 I love how you and Eleanor have matching hats, Naomi! Such a lovely family!

  23. Megan

sign me up for koala life too! These pictures are too cute and such an amazing experience!

  24. When we went to Australia, it seemed like all we ever did was visit zoos and aquariums, but I loved it. I remember our zoo tour guide was so excited about having a buck (a deer!) in the zoo. He kept raving about its antlers.

Living on the US East coast near the forest, you see deer everyday, so I thought was the cutest thing ever! Of course, I would love to have kangaroos and koalas on this side of the hemisphere too.

do you offer a promo code for sonnet james? i have eyed that reese dress since she first started making them, but that price is not in my budget. A girl can dream ;)

  26. Julie

Hey Taza, your comment about signing you up to a Koala life made me giggle so much. At the present time, with baby #3 going from virus, to cough to now teething I am on my knees and could really do with a week of koala life too..rhhaaaa!
I love the pics of you and Conrad with the koala, this is just heart melting! You can really see his excitement…bless!
    xx Julie

  27. Rachel

By far my favorite Australia post yet! What I wouldn’t give to spend a whole day with these adorable kangaroos! I think that it is so lovely how you have your children on all of these adventures. Being able to try new foods, see places around the world, and even holding a python, will benefit them so much in their future.

  28. Samantha

    Looks like so much fun!!

  29. Caroline

Great pics! Curious how you travel with all those cute hats?
