my budding photographers: take II

i’m not sure if you remember, but last year around the holidays, i gave samson and eleanor each their own disposable cameras. we taught them how to turn on the flash and press “click” and then i encouraged them to take them with them whenever they’d like, and take pictures of anything they wanted to remember or anything that made them feel something. you can see their first photos here from when we got the film developed last time.  honestly, i just love that batch of photos so much. they had the best time snapping away and i know as their mother i am completely swayed and biased and everything else that comes with that territory, but i thought there were a lot of beautiful shots there.

we did it again at the beginning of summer and just got around to developing their film.  it’s always a lot of fun when we get the film back. besides a few black photos, most turn out so well! and so very artistic. ;)  in addition to having the photo lab put them on a CD for me, i have them print out all the photos so the kids can physically hold them, and have them, and save them.

here are a few from the latest batch….

kidspics1 ^^^oh the feet photos! the feet photos are the greatest!^^^

kidspics3kidspics6 kidspics5 ^^^store window reflections like a boss.^^^

^^^and several on the latest roll of pointing to this crab in the sand from a day at the beach last month!^^^

kidspics10 ^^^it’s so fascinating to see what they “see” while they’re in their stroller snapping pics as we’re on the go.^^^

^^^probably my favorite shot E must have taken of samson scooting down the street after soccer practice. ^^^

i’m so grateful for the invention of film because photos mean the world to me. also, being their mama has to be the greatest gig on earth. i love them.

Great idea Naomi, thanks for sharing!

  2. Gemma

I am so going to do this with my daughter, it is such a lovely idea. Being a Photographer, I hope she loves being creative and I hope that I can bring that out in her.

  3. Barbara

you have had a great idea! i give my camera to my four-years-old daughter from time to time and she loves taking pictures… but I’m always afraid that she can break it… a disposable camera is exactly what i need! thanks for the idea!!
and seeing the world through their eyes is priceless!!

  4. Alliyah

This is just the sweetest thing! Such a lovely idea :’)

  5. Melissa

I love this idea! It really is so cool seeing life from their perspective – from their walking height, their strollers, etc. And they took some pretty artsy shots too! Love the one of E jumping on the bed, so cute!!

  6. marie

That guy in the last photo is totally smiling at the camera! Haha that’s a nice moment. :) Once I allowed my son to snap photos using my handphone and when I took it back after 5 mins, it turns out that he took over 50 photos of his baby brother crying. LOL!!!

Such a cute idea! I think when my little one gets old enough i’m going to adopt! I think NYC has more photo worthy opportunities than Charlotte ha! but we will see!

  8. Erin

I absolutely love these posts! It’s such a great way to get the little ones involved in creating memories from their perspective.

These are so wonderful! As a big fan of film, I really support this project! I can’t wait to do the same with my kids one day. I love the shots of the street scenes from their perspective.

  17. Jessie

Your kids really take great pictures. The framing and composition of some of their shots… There are PLENTY of adults who don’t know how to compose a picture as well as your kids. So neat! I definitely want to do this when I have kids some day.

  18. ashley

Naomi – amazing idea! I super love these. They are innocent, precious, thoughtful and to be honest – I’d agree, pretty artistic. ;) So fun!!

  19. Kevyn

I just wanna say how amazing of a mom you are and i hope to be as awesome as you when i become a momma some day.

  20. I love love love this idea and am going to try it with my kiddos as well. that photo above of the buildings reflected in the water is really gorgeous! nicely done!

  21. Kay

What a wonderful idea, some really great pics too! =)

  22. Violette

Am I only one who saw the first image and thought it looked like a little memory from “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”? Something about the way that the image is completely dark except for his foot, which is the item his gaze is fixed upon and also happens to be lit with his camera flash.

It’s so rare to see feet photographs that children have taken of their own feet. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I think that it’s a great image.

  23. Layla

These are the cutest! I love the shot of Eleanor jumping! It’s pretty amazing what kids can come up with when you give them a camera and disposables are the most fun!

  24. Ashley

This is really a great idea!

  25. V

I love this idea! I might have to use it when my little one is old enough :) They took some cute pics, You forget that The world would look so much bigger & different to them, especially Manhatten!

  26. ashley

what a neat idea! i’m going to have to try this out one day with my future children. it’s rare that they get the opportunity to be the ones behind the camera at that age! :)

  27. Cute. show them when they grow up and they would love you even more for that.

  28. Queenie
