a little karaoke never hurt anyone (except for everyone listening…)

girlsnight

last week a few of my girlfriends and i went out to hill country bbq for dinner and to sing our hearts out with their live band at karaoke night. we went in celebration of my friend monica’s birthday and decided to conquer our fears/mortify the crowd together with a group rendition of call me, maybe.  i’ll be the first to admit that it was horribly painful to get through. we were well aware. so i can’t even imagine what it must have been like to…sit and listen. but the band and crowd was very kind afterwards and we had the greatest time.

i have secretly always wished i could sing. when i was little all i wanted to be was a “singer-songer.”  but even after a few years of voice lessons i’ve got nothing to show for myself in that area and can’t carry a tune.  all you people who can sing, i so want to be you. in the meantime i’ll just keep going to karaoke nights and pretend i’m owning that stage and getting all four the voice chairs to turn around in awe. ;) a girl can dream, right?

girlsnight5girlsnight2girlsnight6girlsnight3

thanks for such a fun night, friends! and happiest birthday to my girl monica! i love you, lady.

  1. What fun!!! We have a Hill Country BBQ here in DC and I’ve been wanting to try out the live band karaoke for the longest time! I must go now that I can see it really IS that fun! :)

  2. I am with you on the singing. I also took lessons as a teenager and gave a few frightful renditions of Memories & Co, but it was no good. However I think it is anyone’s duty to suck at karaoke. I secretly hate the people who are really good and then they hog the microphone and get all the cheers. It’s more fun to suck at least when you have your girlfriends with you and some tequila shots.

  3. Yadi

This is the CUTEST thing ever!!! I’ve never ever done karaoke but I’m dying to try it. Maybe not Call Me, Maybe. lol :)

  4. Damaris

A band karaoke, that looks like fun!! I can’t neither carry a tune but nevertheless I would love to try it with a group of friends like yours! (too embarrassing to hear my voice alone ;) ).

Looks like you had a blast! A friend and I took my mom to her first private karaoke room in Koreatown last weekend and damned if a star wasn’t born. After her initial protestations, she let loose and had a great time belting out the tunes. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.

The only time I don’t enjoy karaoke is when an entire group of musical theatre students descends on the mic, shaming all the amateurs into silently watching their performance. Hence, private karaoke rooms!

  6. rachel

every time i see photos of you, i think…there is someone who just radiates beauty…from within. there’s something about you that just sparkles! and you’ve given that gift to your little ones too, because they have that same radiant glow. it’s given something to aspire to.

  7. rachel

    *given me*! haha.

  8. This is adorable!! I love karaoke and this just seems too fun. It makes me want to grab all of my girlfriends and go to a karaoke night. :)

  9. Hanna

This looks like so much fun! I love karaoke, its so entertaining, especially when the singing is terrible. Hanna Marie

  10. Kendra

karaoke at hill country bbq is so much fun! i just wish they would update their music selection list a bit more frequently!

  11. Megan

Looks like a blast! Hey at least you can dance… I can’t do either!

Where is your lovely blouse from? If its recent I guess.?

  12. Jess

At least you had fun!!! And I think people know what they’re getting into when they go to a karaoke bar…right? =)

  13. Meghan

Hi! Love this post because it looks like it was such a fun time, but also that you guys don’t car what you sounded like and just had fun. (That’s the most important part anyway right?)

So I don’t know how often you get to see all your comments, but I had to drop a note to see if you and Josh know the song “A Father’s First Spring” by The Avett Brothers? 1) Because it’s beautiful. 2) Because the daughter’s name is Eleanor and it made me think of your family!

    “I was a child before
The day that I met Eleanor.”

looks so fun! i also have never been able to fulfill my dream of having a beautiful voice…. i’ll be sticking to karaoke with the girls as well, but oh how fun it is! thanks for sharing your exciting night out!

  15. cortney

this looks like a lot of fun. i would definitely need to have a drink or three before getting on stage in front of people and singing. i’m with you, i’ve secretly always wished i was really good at singing. but i’ll tell you what, i am a really good singer when i’m alone in the car.

    xo

  16. Hey, I get it… sometimes, I stand in the mirror and think, good morning Beyonce – go out there and give the crowd what they’re looking for!

  17. soooo much fun! my karaoke song is always “killing me softly.” ;-) you look like you’re having a blast, and that’s what matters in karaoke!!

  18. Rayani

    =]
It’s a super nice feeling to allow yourself to do funny things…
I don’t know to dance, and sometimes I try it. It’s really nice.

  19. Ana

I really wanted to be a singer when I was a kid, but I have no talents!! I wish I had the courage to sing at a karaoke though. I’ve wanted to, but never had the courage!!

  20. JM

Ha, this looks like fun. I’ve always felt that karaoke is best after a few drinks, though I am guessing that might not be an option for you? (sorry, I am not very familiar with your religion).

But it’s a fun idea. I love singing, always have, and I can see how Call me Maybe is a great karaoke song. Looks like you had a great time!

Looks like all of you had a blast! Girls singing karoke together, definitely one of the best and fun moments a girl can have. Haha.

  23. Natalie

And I wish I could dance. We all want something we can’t have! :)

  24. lena

Naomi, this looks like so much fun!

Do you mind sharing what color blush you wear? It’s lovely!

  25. I also so wish I had a great voice. I love singing, so I usually get my fix while working at home. Only the dogs have to put up with it that way :)

  26. Adorable! I’m the same way, I wish I could sing and I definitely give karaoke my all. Waita go!

  27. Kate

So fun! I love karaoke, despite not being a great singer. The key is to practice one song so you have a go-to. Mine Is Son of a Preacher Man. Unfortunately, many of my friends are musical theatre people so I always make sure I go before them because there is no going after them!

  28. Hannah

Looks like fun! I would love to know where your booties are from! so cute!

  30. Karaoke is SO FUN. I’m living in Korea now and karaoke (norebang) is a serious pastime. I’m really tempted to buy a karaoke machine in the future! :)

  31. This looks like a blast! I’ve wanted to find a place that does karaoke, I’ve never done it in public before. I’d go classic- Livin’ on a Prayer probably!

  32. this is completely adorable!

  33. haha! I love your hand in the air like you’re hitting a high note or something. Very Mariah Carey no?

i feel like the best of times are the times when we make a complete fool out of ourselves. So fun!

  34. Bea

Of course a girl can dream!!!
I sing while I take a shower, and while I drive…a shower and a car are the best places for singing!!!
    Buona giornata!!!

  35. Ariel

There was a short period of time my entire family was OBSESSED with karaoke! It was seriously too funny. I even got a karaoke machine for Christmas which turned up in several birthday gatherings/holiday events for about two years after. Some seriously good times when people are bad singers! ;)

  36. Ariel

And also I said “seriously” waaayy too many times! HA!

  37. I hear you on the singing thing. My favourite karaoke song is Total Eclipse Of The Heart because I like doing a dramatic “turn around” movement at the start (then it’s pretty much downhill from there…) x

  38. arg! I hear ya. Especially at church. Oh I almost cry when I hear other people sing so gloriously. I really am jealous. and I have four kids who have all taken after me. I seriously worry our neighbours will think something is dying at our house every Monday night when we sing our hearts out badly for FHE.

I tell everyone I cant sing. Often people say ‘Everyone can sing!” and I say no really…. One day I was singing a Christmas carol with the RS and my lovely Indian friend said… Oh you were right! you really cant sing!’ Um yeah pretty sure I told you that!
So when people who can sing say they cant that annoys me because they are the ones prolonging the stereotype that everyone can sing lol.

Love to you from a fellow bad singer (sob sob) I still belt it out in the car…. wonder how long my kids will let this go on….

  39. Tanja

This is toooo funny. The Cronut-clip was just showing on danish television! I think you guys looked super cute.

  40. Joanna

I used to live in South Korea and karaoke was one of my favourite things to do on a Friday night!! It’s so therapeutic to just sing your heart out, the right song choice can make a world of difference!

  41. deloom

Love it! karaoke is always a good time, especially if you lack the skills to carry a tune :) Looks like you ladies had a blast…and happy birthday Monica!

  42. Jessi

so fun! karaoke is definitely on my bucket list, though i cannot sing either!

  43. kirsty roberts

hi, you look like you had afab time. This is a question thats totally unrelated…..sorry. ….I have 3 daughters, youngest, poppy, is two months (she is gorgeous by the way)! My other two go to dancing, the younger one is five and has been going since she was three and she’s amazing. Naturally talented. However, I’m not a pushy parent and the dance company she goes to do shows at a theatre and I’ve never let her do the show because I just feel she’s too young, but that means shes the only one that doesnt do it. How old were you when you started? And will you be letting Eleanor and Samson start dancing while they are young? Xxxx

  44. renata

I SO wanna hear your singing now!

  45. i haven’t karaoke-d in far too long.. i’m inspired!
    xx

  46. Micaela

you are so wonderful, taza! thanks for giving me an idea for my ‘ladies night out’.

  47. Oh gosh – I could only do it if i had maybe 100 people singing with me. You’re brave. (and I’m so happy to be back to reading blogs – I have some catching up to do!)

  48. Valerie

That’s awesome! You are so brave. I could never do that. I went to a kara oke night at a bar one time yeeeeeaaarrrrrrrrsssssss ago and the first three people who got up on stage could sing….like REALLY sing. One sang Aretha Franklin and actually sounded somewhat like her. The other two were equally as talented. So they screwed up that karaoke night for people like you and me who oh so wish we could get up there and elicit shock and awe due to our amazing singing voices. Anyways, looks like you had a ton of fun and I’m vicariously LOVING it!

  49. Melanie

looks like so much fun! I’ve always wanted to get up on stage and sing karaoke but every time something stops me! Good for you ladies! :)

  50. Steph

She’s a great one, that Monica. Still cracks me up that you two have found each other – match made in heaven, I reckon!

  51. calla

so adorable. i love love having fun with girlfriends. i moved to dc from chicago after i got married && miss my girlfriends horribly!

  52. I”m sorry, but there is nothing funner than belting out your favorite tune at the top of your lungs – you go, girl!

  53. This makes me want to go to a karaoke bar again!
Still remember when I went to one in New York and the “DJ” knew I was German. The two songs I was able to choose from were “Oh Tannenbaum” and “99 Luftballons”. Hilarious!

Btw, really curious about your shop! When is it going to be “open”?
    Hugs!

  54. Sarah

Funny enough..singing and performing is a huge part of my life. And yet, I’ve never done karaoke. Seems like it’s more fun when it’s all about silliness, you know? Also, I’ve always, always, always wished I could dance. I’m so uncoordinated that it’s all I can do to get through the choreography I have to do for various plays and performances. I’ve often wondered what it’d be like to use my body in that way…it looks so freeing. Grass is always greener on the other side, I guess…. :)

  55. This looks so fun! I can’t remember the last time I sang my heart out like that, but I know I need to do it again soon! Xo

  56. Paulina

haha I also love singing, but I’m really aware of how terrible I sound.

It looks like you had tons of fun =)

  57. good post ! thank you !

  58. Betty

I trained in voice and can sing anything from soul to an Italian operetta, but 6 years of ballet never gained me much talent. Trade for a day?

  59. ioana

    Thx for post!
