oh hey what’s up. see these photos? yep. this is just us, trying to take a family photo in st. marks square in venice.

fail.
i should have just asked somebody else to take the photo for us, but my arms were feeling particularly long and confident on this day. and why can everyone else somehow perfect the one-arm-extended-out-front-camera-shot?
if we get a decent photo of all four of us davis’ for a christmas card this year, it will surely be a christmas miracle.
anyway, we flew back into new york tonight and it feels great to be home. we survived two weeks traveling all over italy with our littles and i’m so thankful that after 5 years in the talking and dreaming stages, we finally did it. if you’re interested, i’d love to share a few thoughts later on in the week as to what worked/ what didn’t when it comes to traveling with little ones all over a foreign country.  i know many of you have done it multiple times with more than two kids in tow, but hopefully there will be something in there worth noting. or at least a silly picture?
it’s great to see you, new york. and thanks for not causing wreck in my apartment while we were away, sandy.
  1. Those pictures are still cute! :) Glad you all had fun, and welcome back to the States!

  2. these pictures are just wonderful! who needs perfect when you can have a picture that really shows your personalities! love it! xo

  5. so glad your new home wasn't torn apart by sandy while you were away–and i have loved all your sweet photos from abroad. and indeed, the one-arm-extended-out-front is an acquired skill that i have not acquired…

  6. Can you also recap where all you went or at least how you decided on what places to see? A vacation to Italy has been a dream of mine but I don't really know where to start! Glad you're all back safe and sound!

  7. we have many of these (failed) charming family pictures! can't wait to hear your travel tips as we're hoping to go to europe with our little ones too!

  28. Laura

Definitely interested in your travel tips, particularly long airplane travel and dealing with jet lag!!! Did you take your car seat onto the plane for Eleanor? Next month we're flying from the West Coast to South Africa with our very feisty 23-month-old. Yikes!!

    Welcome home!

  29. Marie

  34. Shoot! I struggle with the one armed photo for mere self portraits never-mind while holding a wiggling human being! Arms of steel girl!

  35. Mariana

Not the best photo, but best memories!
And the photo is actually very cute, too. :)

I'm glad you had a great time in Italy and you're back home safe!

  36. Welcome Home!!!!– and welcome back to new york, real life and the USA, of course. I can't wait to hear and see more of your two weeks travel to one of my favorite places on this earth.

p.s. I have no doubt you guys will come up with an adorable christmas card photo- you always do! xo

  37. Here's the best way to take an arms length shot, if you are right handed – turn the camera upside down and press the button with your thumb. Simple but so so effective!

  38. barbara

I'm glad you had fun and avoided sandy in ny and the huge amount of rain here in venice (high water level alarm!)

  39. Haha! I love these pics! I would love to hear your travel tips too! Xx

  40. I love that even when the circumstances are not always as they were planned, you always keep your smiles on! Can't wait for some post-journey posts. x

  55. My husband and I traveled to Europe (Denmark/Sweden) a few months ago with our the 16 mo. old. It was chaotic and exhausting, and multiple times I remember thinking how crazy we were to have attempted the trip. But now, in hindsight, I am SOOO glad we took the plunge and went. I've already forgotten about dealing with jet lag, missed naps, and toddler meltdowns.

I hope to do a blog post soon about all the little tricks we learned along the way. Can't wait to see what worked for your family! These posts are sooo helpful for traveling families.

  67. It looks natural and loving, certainly not a fail!

  68. Good to see someone else who cannot manage the one arm selfie. We spent October travelling France with a 10 month old. The only photo we managed to get of the three of us we asked someone else to take the shot….But then my partner had his eyes closed!

  69. you are an extemely cute family :) well, how was venice? cause i'm flying on Saturday and I heard it's flooded! how did you deal with that? cause i'm a little bit scared and I don't even know what kind of clothes to take with me..

  70. LISA

a post on traveling with the two kiddos would be awesome and appreciated! I'm traveling to Italy for Christmas and although I travel there often, this will be my first time with two kids instead of my usual one. how was the donkey over there? were you able to get through doors with it? did you find it hindered your adventure at all? did you bring car seats as well? i cant decide if i should just bring a single stroller and infant carrier or a double stroller!
