puffed pancake recipe.

for those who asked for the puffed pancake recipe from this post last week, here it is! i thought i had shared it before on the blog but after searching my archives i realized i’d only left the recipe in the comment section of a post a few years ago. it’s the simplest thing to make on this planet… i grew up eating them on the weekends with my family, and now josh and i eat them more than we’d like to admit!
puffed pancakes:
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup flour
dash of salt
dash of cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter
preheat oven to 425 degrees.
whisk together the eggs, milk, flour, salt and cinnamon in a bowl.
while the oven is preheating, melt the butter in a pie pan or 9 inch square pan.
pour the batter into the hot melted buttered pan.
bake 10-12 minutes (or until the pancake is firm and has puffed around the edges).
the pancake will shrink down a bit after coming out of the oven (that’s ok.) serve right away with lemon juice, powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fruit.

  4. Victoria

Sounds delicious! Will have to give them a go. x

  5. Lindsey

my husband and I eat these almost every weekend. I too grew up eating them, but haven't tried cinnamon in them-brilliant idea!

  6. In our house we call them German Pancakes. They have been a staple in my husbands childhood and now in our little family. Our recipe is really similar to yours! I love the placement of everything in the second photo. Lovely!

  7. I make this all the time (as recently as this morning!) but mine never look as pretty as yours :p

  8. definitely trying this tomorrow morning!

  9. Thank you so much for posting this!!! I've been dying to try them since reading your entry. I'm a big fan of food. :)

  10. Taylor

We call these German Pancakes like another reader up there said. We never have these very often. When company comes over, it's our go to breakfast and it makes it so special! I love these!

  11. haley

Looks delish! Going to try these as a reward for studying so hard!

  12. This looks amazing! I can't believe how simple the recipe is. Yumm!

  13. that looks amazing! and so easy, totally making these, maybe for dinner tonight…

  14. Cassi

We make this in a 9×13 dish and call them German pancakes, too. They're delicious drizzled with chokecherry syrup! I'll have to try making smaller versions in a pie dish- that's a great idea!

  15. Yum! I think I would love that. My husbands Christmas breakfast tradition is apple puff pancakes. I need to share that recipe–I'm sure you would love it.

  16. I must admit ever since you posted this awhile back I've been having it constantly! Breakfast, lunch and dinner ;)

  17. Anne

I know those as hootenanny pancakes. Next time you make them, try topping them with sour cream and strawberry (or raspberry) jam. Delish!

  18. Whit

This looks like the perfect Sunday morning breakfast! I want to try making a gluten-free version, maybe with nutella and bananas too!
Great post, and your blog is lovely as always <3

ps I know it's not the focus of your blog, but I love your style! Bold lips and those glasses, so chic!

Hope you and your photogenic little family have a lovely weekend!

  19. this looks amazing! I must do this!

  20. Yum! I will be making these in the near future.

  21. YUM! cannot wait to try this (with gluten-free flour)! :)

  22. Sarah

I'm going to try this with some sliced baked apples for dessert!

  23. We ate these growing up (except in a 13×9 pan because we're a big family)! We called them "bubble works" which was just a silly name one of my sisters made up when we were children. :) Your pictures looked so delish that I decided to make this for dinner tonight so my husband gets to eat them for the first time!

  24. Cristina

thanks so much for sharing! we'll definitely be trying these :)

  25. Ha, too funny. I JUST posted this recipe on my blog on Friday! I use a little more butter and nutmeg instead of cinnamon, but everything else is the same. It is sooooo good!

  26. I usually don't care much for pancakes…unless they're chocolate chip pancakes :) But these I may have to try!

  27. Sarah

Just made this for breakfast (I live in Japan and it's Monday morning here!) I added chocolate chips since I can't have pancakes without chocolate. It's delicious!! Thanks so much for sharing!

  29. 2busy

    Oh, Yeah! Thank you!

  30. Ohhhh, yes! Thank you so much. Yum.

  31. How many does it normally make? Do you think it'd work ok with spelt or another wheat free flour? Looks delish!!

  32. Oh I'm so excited you decided to post this! I saw it and was curious! Tonight I needed something quick and simple to make for dinner so I gave it a try and LOVED it!!!

    Hey Taza,

I'm from the DC area, so it's always a treat to read your blog and get a little feel of home through your posts and pictures (we are living abroad so very far away!). Such an awesome place. Do you think you'll end up settling there for good?
Pregnancy looks great on you! And like all 5 million people have said over and over, your girl is a doll, truly. What a cute fam!

  44. Gina

This is awesome! I'm totally going to try this one day when I have time!

  45. Mm thanks! Beats regular old homemade pancakes (although those are yummy too!)

  46. Yum! Add one more egg and we'd call that a "Dutch Baby" in my family :)

  47. We call it "Big Dutch Baby" at my house. It turns out really beautiful if cooked in a cast iron skillet. Also, my mom has a silicone cupcake pan and you can make individual ones that are a bit larger. Thanks for sharing!

if you sprinkle a little bit of brown sugar in the bottom of the pan before pouring in the pancake mix it caramelizes while it's baking. SO GOOD!

I don't know whether to thank you or curse you. Me and Hubby had one for breakfast, and while we both loved it, the icing on the "pan"cake was that it was also very easy to make. I see a lot of these in our future.

    Okay I've decided.

    Thank you!!!
