here’s to happiness {christmas edition.}

it has been a long time since we’ve done a happy list on this blog. and since christmas is just a few days away, there is so much to be happy about and grateful for. so here are 10 things that make me terribly happy this week:
  1. the little girl at eastern market who saw kingsley and said “mom, why is that doggy so mad?” to which her mother replied, “he’s not mad, honey. that’s just his face.”
  2. josh finally caving in and watching home alone 2 with me last night. (i love that movie.)
  3. getting to the post office early and only having to wait in line for 20 minutes.
  4. that after trying on 3 or 4 different dresses sunday, i finally found one that still fit. (see photo above. thank you thank you, stretchy elastic waist band!)
  5. christmas music nonstop on the radio!
  6. for all the friendly “merry christmas!” or “happy holidays!” greetings i’ve received from strangers at the check out aisle, in the parking lot or as i walk down the street.
  7. the promise of snow on christmas day in d.c. (crossing my fingers weather.com isn’t going to say “just kidding!” about this in a few days.)
  8. all the fabulous meals josh has been cooking in the crock pot.
  9. receiving christmas cards in the mail!
  10. that baby is almost here!
merry christmas!
what makes you terribly happy this week?
  1. that is so cute that the mom said "that's just his face"! i love bulldogs and their hilarious expressions :)

  2. This is such a precious list!

My good friends made me terribly happy this week, as well as wellies in the snow and warm soup. Mmmmm.

    Merry Christmas!

    Much love,

  5. benson

people love a "woman with child" this time of year… tis the season, non?
ps. and yes, naomi–we have a feeling you WILL get snow–in AZ we've got a snow warning for Wednesday/Thursday–it's headed your way!

  6. Merry Christmas!

Things that make me happy right now:

    – my baby girl has started calling me "Ma-Ma" just in time for Christmas. best. gift. EVER

    – we have 4 litres of egg nog in the fridge

    – we have back-up ice cream

    – my husband (in general)

  7. Katz NYC

Great list. I'm terribly happy that I'm all done with my xmas shopping. Every other year you'd see me browsing around stores at xmas eve after work all miserable and stressed out. But I'm all done, just two more items I'm waiting for the mailman to deliver (gotta love online shopping) and wrap those up and relax…

  8. Ashley

    Merry Christmas!

I'm also happy about all the cards I'm getting in the mail. Saturday there was 3 and yesterday there was 4! So exciting!

Also, I'm happy that I got to go look at Christmas lights last night! =) always a fun tradition!

    Have a wonderful day!

  9. Riley

    I love this list!
Your dress is so pretty, but then again I love everything you wear.
I can't believe that the baby will be here soon! :)
    Merry Christmas!

  10. Deepali

What a great list! I love Home Alone and Home Alone 2 as well. In fact I asked my husband to watch either one last night to which he responded with his "are you kidding?" face. Oh well.
Baby kicking inside me makes me so happy. Christmas lights and the smell of my tree, named Coco. Spending the holidays with family and eating chocolate croissants for breakfast Christmas morning!

  11. MellyB

I also watched Home Alone 2 last night! One of my all time favorite movie scenes is where the Kevin has the movie accuse the hotel concierge of smooching on Cliff. Love it!

I'm happy about the ten thousand sweets that have infiltrated every office building and house in America. Triple yay for my mouth, boo for my thighs.

  12. Karin

I love your happy list! And I am also very thankful for #7 (I live in Arlington)…I'm hoping and praying that we aren't let down…let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! :)

  13. Can we make a deal that it doesn't snow on Christmas until I'm on my 3pm flight outta here? Because I'd really like to see my family.

I have totally agree with the rest of your list though!

  14. Ah, I just love the happy lists!! I pretty much gotta say diddo on everything you've put, especially #'s 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10!

I'm very happy today because my three-year old has made Christmas so magical this year…she believes in Santa, loves Christmas and the Baby Jesus and her Baby Sister.

So glad that my husband is home for the holidays so we can sleep under the Christmas tree tomorrow and play games until late at night!

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas from Montana! Wishing you happy tidings with that new bundle of joy you'll be receiving soon too!

  20. sara

    you are so beautiful
i hope you have a wonderful, magical holiday.

ps this list is fantastic and definitely made me smile

  21. Lindsey

Your number 1 made me burst out laughing. What has been making me happy lately is listening to "Holiday" by Vampire Weekend. I don't know how you could not smile listening to that song. What also made me happy is the phone call to my mother I sent from "Santa" using http://www.sendacallfromsanta.com . My mommy said it made her feel like a little kid. You must use it! Merry Christmas!

  22. Chelsea

the promise of snow sounds so wonderful. no snow in vegas ;(

  23. +The kindness of strangers makes me happy!
+ Being able to drive home to Chicago for the Christmas holiday to see my family
+ Feeling truly hopeful after major changes in my life recently
+ Hearing the peanuts song in the store
+ Being able to cook dinner for friends that have visited over the last week

Merry Christmas! Hope you have a fabulous week!

-Witnessing how happy, friendly and jolly everyone is…from the checkout people to total strangers.
-Christmas music on everywhere we go.
-The lights, the lights, the lights :)
-Hot tea in the afternoon (or wine) while I sit down to open cards we received in the mail.

  27. Alivia

These things make me terribly happy, too!
Hahah, "why is that doggy so mad?" :)

  28. Kim

    – hearing that my brother will probably be able to come over for Christmas after all (airports were all closed here due to severe weather) Fingers crossed!
    – getting all my Christmas shopping done on time (and finding the perfect present for my dad who never tells us what he'd like)
    – marrrons glacés from Pierre Marcolini
    – Chuck and Blair still loving each other on Gossip Girl (cheesy I know, I just catched up on episodes)
    – the super helpful member service people at the zoo
    – discovering that The Sound of Music will be on tv at new years eve (never seen it completely!!!! this year is my chance)

And love your cardigan (or dress?) (and entire blog actually)! Merry Christmas!!

  29. Rachel

Thank you so much for posting this! I've been feeling a little out of sorts lately and reading your list and subsequently making my own really helped turn my week around and got me excited for Christmas again :D

Here is my list of little things that make me happy:

    1. Snow! I can't wait to bundle up and play in the snow with my boyfriend and my sister.
    2. My boyfriend. He has been so amazing and supportive this year. I am so grateful for presence in my life. He keeps me grounded and sane when everything seems to be falling apart.
    3. Baking. Whenever I'm feeling stressed or angry, I bake. It puts me in a good mood and reminds me of my Grandma.
    4. Alison Eve! When I met my best friend Alison four years ago, we started a tradition we decided to call "Alison Eve" in which my family and I exchanged gifts with Alison. It is one of my favorite moments of the holiday season and I hope it continues far far far into the future! :D
    5. Christmas Movies. I love love love watching Christmas movies! My favorite is Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town.
    6. Shopping for Gifts. I normally hate shopping, but there is just something about shopping for Christmas gifts that instantly puts me in a good mood.
    7. My Mom's Potato Soup. My Mom makes the best homemade potato soup. It is one of my favorite dishes and she only makes it once during the Christmas season.
    8. No School! This last semester was the most difficult and the most stressful…I'm so relieved that I finally have a break and can relax.
    9. My Electric Blanket. My boyfriend got me my blanket our first Christmas together. It has kept me warm on super cold nights ever since. I love it!
    10. Spending Christmas Eve with Family and Friends

    Merry Christmas!! :D

  30. 2busy

Treats! And not feeling guilty about it. At least for this week, anyway…

  31. HAHAH 'why is that doggy so mad?' That actually made me laugh out loud. Kids say the best things!

  32. Jay

The snow that's been falling :)

  33. Maddy

Home Alone 2 is my favorite! The soundtrack to that movie is the best, too.

Maybe we should watch that.. hm..

    Merry Christmas!

  34. Rhianne

Eee, I love your happy lists and I love number 1 :) thats just his face, hehe!

I'm still working on Home Alone 2 with my boyfriend – I'll crack him one year though :)

  35. April

Your blog also brightens my day and gives me a nice break from work!

  36. chels.e.

merry christmas to you and your growing family!
thanks for the happy list – it always reminds me to count my blessings!

  37. Loving your happy list! My happy list would definitely have to include being home with my family for the holidays and finding out what our first little love.bump will be on Christmas Eve! {I wanted to wait but Tommy wanted to find out and I my heart melted when he said, "I'd like to find out so I can picture playing in the mud with a little boy or girl while I am over here {he's currently deployed}}.

  38. 1. hysterical.

  45. Hii pretty.

Please please come check out my hair accessories. I think you will really love them.

    lovelove.

  46. Kim

i adore your outfit! and that list. i'm terribly happy about spending time with family at christmas and taking a much-needed break from work to sit by the fire and drink eggnog :)

  47. Meghan

Great list and LOVE your outfit. You are the cutest!!

Here's my list (I am regrettably not as concise as I could be):

    1. Giving and receiving Christmas cards in the mail each day. What fun to see my friends and family peeking up at me from each card! I always imagine the card read to me by the person who sent it, so I hear their voices in my head when I read it.

    2. Water. With the dryness from wintertime heaters going full-blast, drinking lots-o-water has become my new favorite pastime. And I'm so thankful to have clean drinking water (well, mostly clean). Not everyone has clean water, which is something we can easily remedy. (we=the people with clean water)

    3. Jane's sweet smiles. She's sick right now, with a fever and tons of snot and everything, and even though I can tell she's really uncomfy, she's still smiley. What a trooper.

    4. How I Met Your Mother dvds. I love that show. I missed the first few seasons on tv, so I got the dvds and I'm going through them now. Their lives are completely different from mine, so it's a fun show for me to watch right now.

    5. Snow! We just got a little more. It's enough for Sam to play in but it's not enough to mess up the roads.

    6. Christmas lights.

    7. Heard some good new on the workfront this past week: Mark won't be out of town as long as we'd anticipated. He was going to be gone a couple months, now it'll probably be more like a few weeks.

    8. Sam's jokes. He told me this one today: "How do you turn off the lamp? With your eyeball! Ha, ha, ha!" (He even does a fake laugh at the end. Which is the funniest part of his jokes.)

    9. Mark brought me a snickers and a san pellagrino the other night. Second-best late-night treat ever. (First-best=seeing Mark after a long day.)

    10. Four more days until Christmas! I love this holiday. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

  51. ah! that first one made my heart so happy! almost like when i was walking my beast of a dog, and a little boy jumped when we rounded the corner and yelled "oh my! i thought he was a lion!!"

  52. Oh, I love that I came upon this. I'm such a sucker for lists. I made my own little happy list over at my nerdy blog a couple days ago. Is it silly that I get all happy reading other people's list too? So silly, I know.

I'm pregnant too. How many weeks are you? I just turned 31wks due February 21st.

Sending good vibes and have a Merry Christmas!

    Big dinosaur hugs,

I'm so thankful and blessed and wish you, Josh, Kingsley and the baby-on-board a wonderful and magical 2011!

  68. Nicole*

i just realized when i saw this pretty picture of you with the initials in the back that my love (and fiance!) and I have the same initials as you and josh. J & N :) maybe that is good luck or something!

    Happy New Year!

  69. cmi

oh what a cute idea! i was encouraged by a sister to think of 3 things every morning that i am grateful for or keep a gratitude journal. but why stop there?
