the gloomy month.

thank goodness josh has a birthday later this month.
because once those christmas decorations come down later this week,
i always start to really dislike january.
but january isn’t so terrible when there is a party to plan….
and birthday fun to be had, i suppose.
otherwise, it’s a torture month of boring cold and bare decor in my opinion.
what do you do to get through january?
or have you always loved january?
maybe you can share your secrets with me…
xo
  1. Oh, I realy hate January, because it's cold, so cold and because I have to get used again, after many happy days of holliday, with waking up early in the morning, go working and so on… But the only thing I love this month is the hope for a new good year and sunny days.

  2. sheila

we usually celebrate Chinese New Year- its really big here in Hawaii- and any reason to celebrate is good enough for me. Coincidentally Chinese New Year and Valentines Day fall on the same day this year… so I decorated for both holidays just yesterday. NOthing better than red hearts and chinese lanterns hung around the house.

  3. Caitlin

I always get pretty gloomy around this time. I used to look forward to Valentines day (even if I was single), but that day is not so fun anymore. I made my own happy traditions to brighten the times. Last valentines day I took my mom out for dinner at a great place In the San Francisco Bay Area. School is starting Jan 16th as well. This semester I am taking ballet…which totally makes Jan fabulous!

  4. January is always kind of a bust for me too, my birthday is New Year's Eve so when that clock strikes 12 it's actually pretty anti-climactic. I don't have any suggestions, per say, but I can safely assume that you'll have a great month with that lovely little puppy of yours!!

  5. i still have my decor up. i can't bear to take it down quite yet. i'm stretching it out 'til the weekend :(.

  6. My birthday's tomorrow, so I have a special place in my heart for January I guess. It's not that bad…

  7. Lisa

Honestly, I'd be happy if winter lasted from December 1st to January 1st. More winter than that, what's the point, really? I just try to sneak a little bit of sunshine every day during January, even if it's cold Utah sunshine.

  8. cassie

The feeling of NEW. I know it sounds stupid and I always feel silly with the new year resolution thing because all that happens is the last two digits of the year change. So why don't we always have different resolutions throughout the year? But there is something about a new year that brings a feeling of fresh. It's like everything I hated about 2009 doesn't matter anymore, because it's a new year and I can do whatever I want. See what I mean by silly? Plus, I work at a tax office so January the last bit of quiet before things get crazy!

  9. You can always celebrate 3 kings day with us! It's on January 6th and it's a Puerto Rican tradition in celebration of the 3 kings finding the Christ Child. The children put boxes of hay with food for the kings horses under there beds the night before and in the morning, if their good, they kids treats and toys.
Its ANOTHER excuse to get and give! Hurray!

  10. Ya know, I feel the same way. In fact, last year I did a blog post on just how much I hate the months immediately following Christmas. I have a love affair with Christmas, so when it's over, I get a little depressed. But my all-time least favorite month is March. And this is why: it's 31 freakin' long days, it's STILL cold and dreary and miserable, we've already endured months of bitter cold and March just prolongs that, the only holiday is St. Patrick's day which doesn't even give us the day off and isn't much fun if you're not a drinker. So alas, the following months are looking a little bleak, particularly March. Sigh.

  11. Sarah

I have always loved January for two reasons:
    1) It's my birthday month, and
    2) January always feels like a slate wiped clean. New year. Setting goals, looking forward, etc. I always feel hopeful in January.

  12. krista

january always used to be a bit of a letdown for me, until my daughter. her birthday is jan 29th. she'll be two this year. now i have something to look forward to every january!

p.s. i have only commented twice before i think, but i saw your remark about how people don't comment on the non-giveaway days. i just wanted to tell you that i read you every day and you never fail to make me see the beauty in life. so thank you. and i promise to comment more. :-)

  13. I get by with a little help from my friends. No really, January is when I make sure to plan ahead and fill my calendar with friend dates! Gym buddies, yoga friends, hiking companions, dance classes…making sure I have something to look forward to almost every day!

  14. jlh06h

January isn't my favorite either, i like to leave my christmas decorations up a little longer, and then i put up fun valentines decorations, and boyfriends birthday is in the beginning of feb so i get to look forward to that :)

  15. Sarah

January is the second worst time of year for me (after summer 'cause I can't stand heat). The holidays are over and everything feels so…gray. January is a gray month for me. Even when the sun is shining I feel it has a certain grayness.

  16. Make things for February, of course!

  17. jackiek

january and i are not good friends. it's super cold and its the start of classes again so it's pretty boring… although i do try to stay busy to make it go by fast! february is always such a good month :)

  18. January really does bring on the blahs so it's great you have a birthday celebration to plan. I usually just spend time dreaming up stuff to do for Valentine's Day! It gets me through the long weeks of January for sure!

  19. planning weekend trips, day trips, vacations! gets me through any month :)

  20. K8

I personally hate January because school starts again and the weather is the worst with now end in sight. Although, both my sisters and one of my brothers have birthdays this month, which means unique dinners out with the fam, so for that its an alright month I suppose.

  21. Dawnica

i always jump right back into school! spring semester starts on monday… but a suggestion for graduates is start a new book!

  22. I love January because it is a fresh start, and I also get to plan birthday getaways for my beloved husband (1/29) and my sweet little crumb (2/7).

  23. I love January because it is a fresh start, and I also get to plan birthday getaways for my beloved husband (1/29) and my sweet little crumb (2/7).

  24. i just leave my christmas decorations up until the end of january :)

  25. Giselle

i love january because it gives me a chance to recover and transition into the new year. my birthday is two weeks after christmas, one week after new years. so there is a lot to recover from. it's funny, i have always favored the cooler months because i love to pile the clothes on. layering to me is something that i find comfort in. and i'm pretty sure it is because i don't have a bikini body (this year that is changing). i love to watch films and i love reading books so staying put under a bunch of blankets (i think i'm allergic to the heater) and getting the most cuddling out of my husband and our little girl this time of year is heaven. also abuelita (mexican hot chocolate) and soup (we improvise with lots of ingredients) are delightful ways that keep us warm.

  26. I hate January too. It's so gloomy and dark.

  27. My birthday is in January =]
    So i've always loved it!
I usually think its a wast unless it snows though ;)

  28. Jalene

i kind of hate january. it's my least favorite month. utah is always bitter cold and miserable.

  29. starting the spring semester helps a bit, plus i get excited for a spring wardrobe (getting sick of coats and tights!)

  30. Crystal

I love January!! But that's because it's summer here in New Zealand… ; ) I guess that doesn't help you much! But on the flipside, July and August are miserable.

  31. i like january because i get a bit fed up of all the fuss and christmas decorations by the end of december, so i think it's nice to have a bit of bleak emptiness!

plus january's super exciting because you have a whole year ahead of you. last january we had no idea about the things that were going to happen to us in the following year and it's the same this year and every year. anything could happen :)

  32. Jenny G

Valentine's Day is right around the corner! :)

  33. I love January. My bday is the
26th :) But I also find January to be the time of new beginnings to bring in the new year with a bang. To forget about all the heart ache from last year and start new.

    January is a beautiful month.

  34. oh no taza! january is the BEST month.
it finally gives me a real excuse to sit inside under a blanket, watch movies, read books, sip hot drinks, and most importantly – bake: it's a perfect way to keep the house warm and smelling delicious.

and also, taking cabs in the winter is totally allowed. basically i spoil myself like crazy to get through this month. join me! :)

  35. Lauren

Hated January when I was a kid…it seemed like the longest month EVER. Now that I'm out of school…and all grown up…I like it. It's a stress free month for me, and I find the cold invigorating. It's a great month to do some deep cleaning too.

  36. I have mixed feelings about January. The excuse of turning the heat on, wrapping myself in a blanket, putting on extra fuzzy socks, and reading a book is too good to pass up. But I agree that it seems very bleak without Christmas decorations everywhere.

  37. come and play in phoenix.

the trees are just turning orange. the orange trees are ripe and full of yummy goodness, and it's 75 degrees today.

i actually like january this year!

  38. my birthday is in January, too – so that keeps me going! other than that… january is cold + gloomy for sure.

  39. robynxx

I love January! It's my birthday month, so how could I not? hahah.

    Love the blog! :D

  40. I am also not a fan of the month of january. i usually just lose myself in my schoolwork and try to get involved with as many fun creative projects as possible.
and i definitely have a lot of projects going on at the moment. fun ones.

  41. Minta

Today I went to the BYU Museum of Art, and that lifted my spirits a lot. Doing creative things inside helps if its gloomy outside, for me. Good luck!

  42. January is my birthday month as well so I have always enjoyed it. It is going to be even more special this year since my present from my husband is a trip to NYC to see Lion King. I am so excited!!

  43. kristen

I love January because it is the middle of summer in New Zealand YAY! But I also love winter – good coffee, good books and great movies get me through!!

  44. Wow! I guess you really hit on something here. Comments galore!

    Realistic suggestions:
Go all out for Golden Globes (TV dinners, theater candy, make predictions and play GG Bingo). Celebrate MLK Jr Day by volunteering. Go to the garden center, soak in the sun and buy a new plant. Vow to read 52 books this year and start the year off with a classic. Make taking down decorations fun on January 5th before the Epiphany. Listen to classical music. Have a serious snow day complete with chocolate chip cookies. Plan a spring break trip and YES clean and organize.

see January isn't so bad. March, that's rough.

  45. ashlee

I've always loved January :) But most likely because my birthday is the 30th. What day is your husbands??

I also like January because its the start of the new year. Gives you the chance to take a deep breath after all the holidays..

But I do agree that once the holidays are over, the cold is pretty much pointless.

    <3

  46. Chloe T

January isn't so bad for me because my birthday is on the 19th so I can look forward to that!
Also, I quite like it because it's just a chance to reminisce over the year just gone, but also to be in good spirits for the year ahead. The first month holds open a lot for you and I love that feeling!

I agree, it's cold. But wouldn't we be bored if we were constantly stuck in summer? (I live in England, so there's no such thing as summer, or the sun, but we try to be optimistic!)

What gets me through January? Being with your loved ones, lots of hot chocolate and looking forward to the rest of the coming year, think of all the good times you'll have!

  47. In January I always seem to be living in angst for February to start so I can put up lots of tacky hearts for Valentine's Day. But, I've decided to start decorating for January so I can ease my way out of Christmas. I'm thinking either winter goodness (inspiration: white snow, evergreen, accents of red berries = a winter look using non-specific Christmas leftovers = perfect transition), or elephants. My grandma loved elephants because they are a symbol of good luck, so I think I might start making January the elephant decor month in honor of the New Year!

With January comes lots of great skiing! That's what gets me though and puts a smile on my face.

  54. oh but January is the time for clean starts and new projects and fun goals! It's also my birthday month, so I'm a little biased. ;) But really…think about all those new years resolutions and delve into them before the motivation wanes! It's quite possibly my most productive month!

  55. Kingsley will get you through!

  56. Kelli

at my house we make January Snowman month and decorate with snowflakes and cute snowman! It makes January fun! =)

  57. pen.ny

No, never ever was a fan of January :(
But birthdays, I am definitely a fan of :)

  58. January's my birthday month too – this is my 18th and I'll be spending it in Utah… so I'm looking forward to this month!
Usually January is tough on me too – what I like is when we 'forget' to take the tree down until like … March :)
    Everyone needs a little Christmas!
I also appreciate when my dad 'forgets' to turn down the heat all the way at night.

  59. Well I personally love January. Funny I hate New Years Eve but I always enjoy New Years Day. I love January though because one of my best friends birthday is on the 3rd and then mine is on the 14th. So it's our birthday month.
    :D

  60. You're right, January can be quite gloomy, but I try to think of the upside: no yard work or weeding, no pollen or allergies, no umbearable heat or humidity, no mosquitos or pesky flies…

I think it's time for you and Josh AND KINGSLEY to put up a little tent (again) in your cozy living room and all snuggle together!! I think Kingsley will think that's so cool. (Btw, I loved his NYC "play-date" photos. HILARIOUS!)

  61. I meant to say "UNbearable" heat or humidity. Gotta get to bed!

  62. Bethany

I'm still listening to Christmas music. It helps keep me happy in the snow.

  63. Belle

Its summer here in australia so i try and enjoy that as much as possible (except when it gets a bit crazy like this weekend will be… 107 degrees… ouch!)

And I also have my birthday next week along with a few other family members, so it is still party, party, party, eat, eat, eat! xx

  64. Strangely I kinda like January… not the whole xmas being over thing but that it's the start of a new year. Just always seems like anything is possible at this time of year… this is when me and the OH plan holidays, think new careers, think about the future etc :) Happy 2010 by the way.

  65. Totally agree – hate January – it's bleak, depressing, cold, miserable and all the shineyness of Christmas is gone! Love your blog though especially Kingsley who is so so cute!

  66. Carolina

so true; tree, decorations & chrismtas seem to leave such empty spot. i'm glad for our kings day here in spain. and then… days start to get longer and love month comes, and many other things start to involve us, and it'll all be exciting again :) lots of love to you. wonderful lady.

  67. haylie

I love January, and I live in Portland, where it seems to rain almost every day (but then I like the rain, too). Sure, the lack of light sucks, but the unpleasant weather means lots of movies and snuggling with spousal unit. And the WINTER OLYMPICS are next month, which is really, really rad.

  68. Louise

I quite like the start of Jan as the year feels so shiny and new, but towards the middle of the month I feel as if Jan will never end (plus I always run out of money after spending loads at xmas!)

I find lots of mugs of hot choc help as do big Sunday roasts. I've also been trying to do such fun activities as ice skating or just heading to a good exhibition :) xx

  69. Angie

I go hog wild on organizing and cleaning. I leave all of my red heart ornaments out – instant Valentines decor! Ooooh – and I redo a piece of furniture or something for the house – kind of like a belated gift for the place that shelters me from the cold and gloom that is January!

  70. Rachel

I do what a lot of other people probably do, plan (keyword) on exercising a lot since there isn't much more happening. That should work up some energy and make me happier :)

  71. i exercise and get as much sunshine as possible. i live in a state with a looooong winter season, so i like to make summer lists

  72. Sara

My birthday gets me through January. February is where I start to lose my luster.

  73. Alyssa

I absolutely hate taking Christmas decorations down; it's so depressing. I feel the same way you do about January. It seems like with all the hype of a new year+new years resolutions+goals, etc that there should be some new (less cold) weather to go along with it. I will usually try to find a book that makes me laugh, and read it. That normally helps me feel better about the nastiness of January.

  74. january is my birthmonth as well. that makes it for sure easier to survive.
to have in mind that it is the mnth of resolutions and a new beginning is also very nice.
i alsways wished my birthday was in summer. always. so i guess i have to move one day.
to australia or something where its summer on my birthday, that would be amazing!

    happy partyplanning!

  75. Lindsey

Aw, man, no birthday's here. I bet you get all the great after Christmas sales when you have an 01 birthday.

For us, since we're teachers, we go back to school and start counting down until MLK day. Three day weekend…hey, that's THIS weekend! Woo Hoo!

  76. Millar

I've been rearranging my furniture all day. I would not recommend that.

If you figured out a cure for the January blues, please post it. I'm having a heck of a time

  77. Reyna

First, celebrate 3 Kings Day. Not only do you get more presents, but then you get to look forward to a party within the next few weeks (or plan one if you're lucky!). Second, lotsa hot chocolate, snowmen, and game nights. My friends and I have game night, movie night, and X-Files (insert a favorite show that is available on dvd)night. Build forts. Wait, you're already good at that.

  78. Katie

Yeah, January is a bare bones sort of month, and I feel so deflated and tired and disgusted with it all.

But even in bareness there is beauty, and somewhere around the first of January I usually make a list of books I want to read in the coming year, which cheers me up considerably – especially when I read one of them the very first week and it turns out to be a new favorite. That's what I call getting off on the right foot!

  79. I love January, but then again I love all of Winter. January is usually packed with cold and snow for the Midwest, and I love being outside in it. I love how cold it makes my room so that I can snuggle up under my covers. I love hot chocolate and DVD nights with family or friends, and I especially love slippers. My love is usually strained come March which is good because then Spring starts…which I also love. I guess I'm not much help haha sorry :/.

  80. kwistin

i like camilla salem's 2nd reason. if i can get the "resolution" flame going, january's a new start for me. elder ballard said, "i am so thoroughly convinced that if we do not learn how to set and achieve our goals, we will reach a ripe old age, looking back to see that we have reached but a small measure of our potential.”

…wow. so, that's my motivation. january is my trial and error month…set goals, then test them to see if they work. adjust, and revise! at least, that's how i try to do it. we'll see if it works.

but i see you've already set wonderful goals. i hope you find your january happies. :]

  81. Erin

last year when I took down our Christmas decorations, I added in their place wintry cut-out snowflakes (from the last semester's notes!) and hung them from the ceiling with dental floss. it was really magical. I saved them all because they were such a pain to make, so I'm thinking it's high time I put them up for this winter.

  82. Ger

January is okay, but then there is February and March!

  83. Karina

I've actually always quite liked January! I feel like it's a fresh, clean start and my house feels the same with all the decorations gone: fresh and clean. Plus for me it means a little peace and quiet because my kids are back in school… I don't know what it's like in the US but here in Holland they get 2 weeks off school and at the end of the second week us mothers tend to go a bit mad! It doesn't help that my daughters have a fear of snow and refused to play outside the entire time, haha. So yeah, I welcome January and its regularity, order and sense of opportunity around every corner.

  84. I'm not a fan of the winter months at all. I live in Iowa and this season has been unusually horrible to us! Maybe it would be better if there was something fun and awesome to do but really with 30 inches of snow and negative temps I really don't want to do anything but hibernate until the spring!!

  85. HA! totally with you on this one. Winter gets intensely cold in January (I hate cold) and there are no exciting holidays. Good thing my birthday is on the 16th and I have about 5 other friends who's birthday is this month too. So, there is always a little celebrating to be done!

  86. Shiloh

Oddly, I love January. It is like the Sunday of my year. A chance to start fresh, rededicate myself to whatever needs rededicating. I also love putting on my running shoes and being one of the few in Prospect Park still dedicated to the early morning run, come rain, snow, or sun. Its like I have the park to myself and the park has me all to itself. In that light, January isn't all that bad.

  87. I so feel the same – and I just keep thinking of that trip that I am going to take somewhere warm in Feb or early March. It's a must do to keep my sanity in the cold of NYC! Focus on the party plans! That's always fun! ;-)

  88. My birthday is on the 28th, so I'm usually partying it up by mid January. This year's my 21st, so mustache mayhem theme and mocktails here I come! Haha.

  89. hey! that looks like my old rooftop apartment on 104th!!! I miss sleeping on that roof.
