we usually agree on everything.

so i have a gazillion decorating ideas going through my head
for our new place in DC. and while i have NO extra time on my hands
at the moment between work and packing and projects,
i’ve found myself inside the paint store
more than once this week looking at paint swatches.
we’re going for this look in our new kitchen
….but we can’t agree on the color…

what do you think?
any thoughts or ideas?
  1. my dad decided to paint our old house’s living room a-look-a-like spring moss and… yeah.

did NOT turn out the nice color as we wanted. it was way too bright.
especially with the rest of the colors in your kitchen split pea would be better…
hope this somewhat helps. seems like we all have different tastes from all the comments you have!

    =)

    Good luck!

I agree with andrea. Buying the smallest container you can of each color and actually painting a sample onto the wall can save you from a lot of work and ending up with walls that you feel like you need to re-paint. I know this has saved my family from a couple of re-painting headaches over the years.

Overall, I like the Spring Moss, because I’m thinking the Split Pea could end up looking a bit muddy once you’ve got it on a wall.

I think the room you’re using as inspiration is fantastic. Good luck pulling it all together and getting all set to move!

  4. Def option A!

  5. Spring Moss is punchier/brighter/funky/complex: would go well with white trim and splashes of other vibrant colors. Could be good in limited use in a small space, but would be fine line between funky and looking like a preschool.

Split Pea has sophistication and depth: would go well with leather (chairs) and med-dark woods and white trim and black picture frames. I'm liking the split pea the best.

    Check out these as well:

I think Husband might like this one: Farrow and Ball – Curlish Green
It's a yellow-green described as a British Breakfast Nook or Wasabi color. It looks like a cross between your spring moss and split pea, at least on my monitor. You really have to look at a color swatch to appreciate F&B; colors though.

    Also:
Farrow and Ball – Cooking Apple Green
    Sherwin Williams – Recycled Glass
    SW – Koi Pond
Benjamin Moore – Kittery Point Green
    BM – Artichoke Hearts
    BM – Sweet Pear
    Behr – Dry Sea Grass

  6. Manda

I love the spring moss! I’m so jealous that your kitchen is going to be my favorite color! Good luck! :D

  7. If your kitchen will get a lot of light (natural or otherwise) dark lime, BM # 2027-10 i slovely as well. We have one wall in our kitchen painted this color and LOVE it. You are giving me great ideas with the matted b&w; photos!

  8. BMarie

I have to say Option A. I love that color and I actually had a kitchen with a color very similar and it was my fave room in the house.

  9. Marisa

Looks like I might be going against what everyone else thinks but I like option B. Although option A would certainly brighten things up!

  10. tawny

    Bright, cheery, happy: OPTION A.

love it. love it. love it

(split pea seems a bit dampish? is that even a word? :) good luck

  11. B K

Definitly Spring moss. It’s quite a bit more cheerful than Split Pea. Also think it would look better with the black picture frames like in the sample picture.

  12. Shara

    Split pea.

Spring moss is too bright for such a large area – I don’t think it will look that good once it’s all painted out.

Split pea is much better as a base, which it looks like that’s what you’re essentially looking for.

  13. Shara

    Split Pea.

Spring Moss is too bright and I don’t think it’s good for such a vast area. Ok, actually it’s gross and you’ll probably hate yourself if you pick Spring Moss.

Split Pea is perfect for a background for all the other cute idea/pictures and such your want to put over it. Much much better!

  14. Rebecca

hmm.. option A is more cheerry… it looks like your cardigan from the last (birthday) post.

    option B is a little more conservative/brooding.

    i vote for A!

  15. I personally vote split pea. The reason is that while the spring moss is a vibrant and happy color, I would more more likely grow tired of it’s boldness. It’s more of a temporary mood fix color. Plus, the split pea seems more classy to me.

  16. Carolyn

I think Spring Moss is very bright and it would go great with black photo frames and would also look nice with wood furniture. The Split Pea is a little more rich and I like the brown and blue undertones in it. (this is me, answering your question yet having an internal dialogue about paint colors. TGIF)

I will choose Split Pea and call it a day. ;)

    Have a great weekend!!!

  17. definitely A

  18. spring moss will reflect more light and it’s cheerier- go for it!

  19. annie

what an exciting move! I just got back from my first trip to DC this afternoon! I fell completely in love with it. Amazing restaurants and museums. I’d go with the spring moss, since paint always dries darker on the wall anyways! great color choices!

i’ve been reading your blog for ages and just want to say how much I enjoy it! always puts a smile on my face!

  20. Katers

    SPRING MOSS!!

  21. Kara

My husband and I just painted our new house and, although we agreed onthe color we were GOING for, our pick for the paint chip that would get us there was wrong every time! All 6 of our first set of samples were MUCH too bright (even though we were going for bright colors).

    I would try split pea.

  22. Def spring moss! the other color- split pea- well do you really want a food color on your Kitchen walls? hmmm.

  23. Def spring moss! the other color- split pea- well do you really want a food color on your Kitchen walls? hmmm.

  24. Erin

ooh la la. Seems like everybody is loving spring moss!
Well. My 2 cents: picturing spring moss on a surface larger than a swatch, feels like it would be too bright. It’s almost neon.
I think split pea would look much better on an entire wall, or entire room.
Spring moss would be overwhelming, me thinks, when on a wall.

  25. D

I like the split pea! Spring moss is a little too bright for me, but I think both would look amazing no matter what!

  26. selene

btw, I just remembered that some paint brands at home depot carry small bags with samples (about 4 oz) of paint, so maybe you should try buying a small sample and see how it looks on the actual wall–for example, my BF’s dad bought a beautiful almond-looking paint for their bedroom, and when he painted it, it looked YELLOW!!
good luck and congrats on your move to DC!! :)

  27. It was a happy accident that I stumbled upon your blog this afternoon, and I think I’ll be stumbling upon it more in the future. My husband is gone camping with the scouts, and I was feeling lonesome. Thanks for putting a spring in my step today.

    p.s.
green moss…I’ve never liked split pea soup for real.

  28. spring moss. it looks more bright, clean. the split pea looks more drab and dirty.

    spring moss please.

  29. mavankt

awesome. I’m all for the spring moss. The split pea is also nice… but the spring moss can hold it’s own. Especially if you are thinking the kitchen, brighter is better.

  30. AAAAAAAAAAAH! A please x

  31. I love that look! I’m more of a fan of the Spring Moss. It just looks more inviting to me. The split pea looks a little too warm (in a dull sense) for a kitchen, but that’s just my opinion!

  32. Shawn

Spring Moss! You will thank us all later!

  33. Rebecca

Spring moss! Not only is it a nicer colour it also has a nicer name =)

  34. BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

split pea-people are just thrown off by the name.

spring moss is way too bright and it will hurt your eyes if there is too much.ha!

B seems like a good base

  35. Katri

Version A is better. B is a little fusty.

  36. j.

definitely option b. i think a will annoy you after a while. you want something that is bright, but still calming.

  37. ESP

Our kitchen is painted a color slightly in between the spectrum of the two colors above. It is called “Dry Leaf”. We were inspired by a color in a sign that I got at my wedding shower that says “Home . . . is where your story begins.” Cliche, perhaps, but I love it. If I could repaint I’d like to think I’d go for the Spring Moss, which goes perfectly with the new spring dish towels I have! I hope you have fun decorating all the rooms in your new space!

  38. Spring Moss.

  39. Helen

split pea! i wish i had somewhere to decorate, i’m always always bookmarking pretty interior photos.

  40. split pea would be my option!

  41. I am a split pea girl (I have it in my family room) but YOU look more like a spring moss girl. :)

  42. Emily

Absolutely Option B- Split Pea. Colors always dry lighter then you think, and I have this feeling Spring moss will be really vibrant and give you a headache after a while :)

  43. Kym

split pea – spring moss is going to get old really quickly. so cute!

  44. Actually, colors dry darker than you might think. But also the color appears much more vivid and strong when on the walls. So… I would say something in between the two of them. I like the bright green, but it just might be overwhelming once it’s actually on the walls. But the other one might be too dark and not as cheery.
There’s my interior design student two cents. ;)

  45. des

i have a friend whose general rule of thumb to paint is go with the fruit or veggie option! his place is amazing and so is our split pea office!

    best of luck!

  46. Lily

Split Pea will give it a warmer, more vintage feel. Spring Moss might get too bright and overwheliming.

  47. Dri_Mar

I’d go for option A! By the way, I just discovered your blog and I really like it!

  48. tawny

k forgot to say this earlier:

    Go with your G U T. (always)

..and you obivously have amazing taste…colors and textures r your thing. you probably already know.

have fun…!(oh and luv ur blog.)

  49. Becky

I like Option A. I am in love with the picture above and with a black frame on top it would look lovely!! I think that the paint dries a shade darker usually right? or is it a shad lighter??

  50. How fun is it to worry about decorating? I personally like Spring Moss. :)

  51. i love split pea, i like the wholesomeness of it. option a is a bit ‘ikea’ for me.

  52. FC

I like option B: Split Pea. its a bit more sophisticated and I think will look amazing in a kitchen… very 1960’s

  53. Kera

it depends on the cabinets. if they are white, do spring moss. if they are darker, do spit pea and do white accessories. or do whatever you want. like you need any help making stuff look cool. :)

  54. My vote is for #B!!!!

mustard is your signature color for sure!

  55. Bree

I think I’m in for spring moss. It’s a bit more cheery to my eye and my eye likes cheery!

  56. spring moss…by far the winner!! better name, better color. very exciting moving to a new city!

  57. Jill

I vote option B, split pea. I think it will turn out more like your photo source, but the spring moss might turn out more lime colored.

  58. I vote spring moss.
I love the inspiration photo, I’m trying to do something similar in my living room right now.

  59. spring moss. would be great for a kitchen. the tone is bright, fun, alive, inviting, comforting, yummy, sweet… everything you want to feel in a kitchen. good luck.

    r.

  60. Belle

    No doubt: A

  61. go for the brighter!! Especially in the kitchen- its very refreshing to get up in the morning and drink oj and tea and eat breakfast in a place that wakes you up! When we first moved into our house we painted it bright green and we love it!!
    http://jenni-n-kev.livejournal.com/76449.html#cutid1

  62. Krysta

I think the color in the photo is probably closer to the split pea. And I think I prefer the split pea if only because the spring moss might be a bit too bright (and apple like) in a larger dose. I think the split pea has a more vintage quality to it.

Good luck with the move and happy decorating!

  63. I am loving A…that is such a great color!

  64. I think the split pea will translate to a brighter color on a big surface

  65. spring moss is my vote!

  66. krysti

go for split pea! the spring moss will give you a headache in the morning!!!! and it’s just a awesome color.

  67. split pea for sure! the other verges on yellow and is definitely a bit neon-y, which isn’t really what you’re going for. it looks a bit more ‘drab’ next to the other swatch, but think about it allllll over your walls!

  68. Ann

OOO, spring moss says kitchen all over it!

  69. Amaya

Spring Moss. It’s much more cheerful. I like cheerful.

  70. Most def: Option A

  71. This is random, but fyi, if you like owls, there is a home decor shop out of San Francisco called: http://www.curiosityshoppeonline.com

They sell lots of interesting and cute decorations including things with owls!

    Love your blog!
