i hope you don’t mind this ginormous photo dump, because i have over 40 photos in this blog post and that is a lot of scrolling! i just get so camera happy this time of year when we get to enjoy the outdoors again, and central park is absolute magic right now.

we might live in a concrete jungle, and we might not have our own private front yard, or back yard, or garden, or whatever it might be that many elsewhere are fortunate to have… but we do have central park. and she’s just a few blocks from our little new york city apartment, and i have to tell you, she fills the gap of no yard juuuuuuussssst fine. :) i so appreciate her in the midst of a bustling city. she offers me and my family so much…. from her playgrounds to her ponds and blossoms and bike paths and hiking trails, to the lawns fit perfectly for a picnic. we might share her with a few million other people, but i think that makes it all the more special.

so many more photos, and some stories below….

i mentioned this on my instagram, but ever since our DC chapter, cherry blossoms have the most special spot in my heart this time of year. i am so glad we get to experience many in the parks around the city, because those trees cannot be outdone.

my two DC babies.  won’t ever forget walking around the tidal basin in DC pregnant with eleanor. and then once again with her as she was learning to walk, super pregnant with samson! maybe that is why i love the blossoms so much, because i associate them with my first two babies.

these rocks right here by the water is a spot josh took me one of the first times we hung out. we walked all the way to these rocks in the park from somewhere down near 34th street, and ended up sitting on these rocks talking for a few more hours in the dark. i should probably state that at this point in getting to know josh, i was super skeptical of him and even asked as we got to the rocks if this was where he brought all the girls. he told me i was the first girl he’d brought to the rocks, but i should also probably say that there was no kissing or moves made or anything like that on this night or at this point. it’s actually a really sweet memory for me because i was sure in my mind at the time that that was why he brought me there, but he was so respectful as we just talked and got to know each other better and i remember getting back to my dorm room so late in the night but still knocking on my girlfriend’s dorm room door and being all, “hey, you know that guy i went out with tonight? i think i really like him!!!”

anyway, while we were sitting on the rocks with the kids the other day, it brought me back and i told them about it. i don’t think they really cared whatsoever but it was still fun to reminisce with josh and pretend they were listening. ;)

these little rock climbers always make me so nervous, but i’ve been doing better at just letting them climb and not freaking out.

this is seriously my favorite time of year when everyone is back outside and in the park!

bumpin’ by the blossoms! probably did a little bit too much walking around the park on this afternoon because i was feeling it when we got home and was seriously hurting. BUT, i think it did me some good because earlier that morning at my routine doctors appointment, both babies were still breech (head up, feet down), and then the following morning after our afternoon in central park the day before, i had another routine ultrasound at my hospital and both babies had flipped!!!! here’s to hoping they don’t flip again and both stay head down for their last few weeks!

also- this guy is a great papa. everyone wants a ride and he’s willing to attempt it!

such a fun beginning to the outdoor season of city living! we’ve waited so long for you, spring! and we are just so freaking happy you’re finally here to stay!!! (no more random 30 degree days thrown into the week, okay?!!?)

have a good one, everyone!

  1. Ashley

yayyy spring!! it is glorious! This might be a silly question but, can you feel the babies flip? Or is it like a kick so it’s not noticeable? Never had babies so super curious. Glad to hear it’s going good!

  2. Margot

Hurray for spring! Thanks for sharing so many pretty photos! Fingers crossed the babes stay head down for you. All the best for the next few weeks :)

  3. Shana

Gorgeous!! I LOVE all of the photos :) Especially of your beautiful “backyard”!!

  4. Lauran

Love this! DC blossoms are the best. Obsessed with following your nyc adventure, and those sweet kiddos!!!

  5. Emma

Such a lovely post! I said this on your instagram too but my favourite ever post of yours is the one with the photos of you and Eleanor in cherry blossoms in DC while you’re pregnant with Samson. I remember reading that post at that time, it’s so funny to think I’m still following along. Thank you so much for sharing.

  6. Alison August

My husband and I visited NYC for the first time last weekend. It’s so fun seeing all yuor pics from the park and around the city and knowing EXCATLY where they were taken! It’sa whole new frame of reference for me. Beautriful photos!

  7. Emma Sears

Love the blossoms!! Our flowers and trees are still in bloom in Utah and it’s my favorite thing. My boys are 4, 3, and 1.5 years old and I’m still in the freak out mode when they climb. Which is everything all the time! Still adjusting to letting them do a little bit more and trying not to stress. They’re just pretty clumsy sometimes so it’s pretty terrifying haha. But your kids look like they’ve got a good handle on the climb and it seems fun! Beautiful pictures!

  8. Cynthia

Loving the photo dumps!!! Beautifully captured, Naomi! I cannot wait to visit NYC with the fam soon!! I love how you’re able to capture the emotions and little things like Conrad’s cute freckles! I just love it so much!

  9. Beth

Love these photos of Josh the Human Jungle Gym! If there’s a way to give five kiddos a ride at once, no doubt he’ll make it happen :)

  10. I truly feel so blessed to have central park as my backyard as well!

  11. Shira

where are your shoes from? i love them!

  12. I was actually thinking about you guys the other day in terms of an outdoor life. I guess there are plenty of parks and green spaces in NY that you never really feel like you’re at a loss of things for your kids. I was wondering though if any of your kids have had an interest in team sports yet, and if there actually are options for your kids to play soccer or baseball or things like that in NYC or if that’s something you’d have to travel further out to do?

  13. Ruth

Thanks for sharing all these photos! I moved away from NYC last summer and have been missing Central Park in the spring so much! Nice to see the park looking so lovely. :-)

  14. Trish O

I read once in an urban design article that some people are “private space” people and want their own yard to play etc. and some people are public space people and much prefer the park. I am a public space person. We have a small urban yard, but my kids grew-up at the park. Now teens, we still use it all the time. I don’t like being closed-up in my own space with no other people. Looks like Central Park is the best public space yard.

  15. I love these photos so much. New York during spring season must be wonderful. I’d love to see these cherry blossoms myself some day.

    Have a fantastic week! <3

  16. Rachel Simmons

E is just perfect! So gorgeous.

  17. Holly Ott

I know you have mentioned this before, but I was hoping you could share where / what type of watches that E and S wear? My 7 yr old Parker Anne and 3 year old, Henry have been asking about watches. I thought, instantly, of your babes.

    Thank you, so much!

    • josh

Hi Holly. I have bought them classic shark and little timex/iron man watches. If the band is too small, you can always just poke an extra hole.

  18. Lindsay Pearson

watch out! those turtles can bite, and it isn’t unusual for them to carry salmonella which can be spread just by touching them.

    • josh

Hi Lindsay! Thanks for your comment. These are exactly the two things I told the kids too when we were there. But the whole point is that they get to learn about risks and consequences and making their own choices and having experiences. Also another reason we always have hand sanitizer with us!

  19. Kristin

I’m wondering if you guys can share how you have facilitated loving relationships between your kids. I am new to two kid parenthood and my two little girls are overall great together, byt I struggle sometimes with the normal “meanness” that toddlers go through. I want my older one to be able to have her feelings of loss about the “new” baby but I also want her to be kind.
Mainly we say she can feel however she feels but she needs to speak kindly to her sister, and any physical aggression isn’t ok.i also worry sometimes that by always requiring a kind tone of voice I’m preventing her from truly expressing her anger?
Do you guys have some tips?

  20. Kit

Lovely, but… I think those are crabapple blossoms, not cherry tree. Not as pink and puffy, but still gorgeous (and fully in bloom, as many of the cherries here are not quite yet).

    • josh

Thanks for this, Kit! We took the pictures in Central Park on Cherry Hill near Cherry Fountain, which are both named for the cherry trees there. I remember seeing a sign for the species of the tree being either Yoshino and Kwanzan, but maybe that was the tree next to it?? Will have to go back and check.

  21. Christina

I live for hearing about your and josh’s love story!! Also, thank you for always focusing on all the love hope and grace in having a family. You make me so excited to become a mother!!
