a day at the ice cream shop!

one of josh’s friends, catherine, quit her day job in the corporate world about a year ago to pursue her dream of opening an ice cream shop here in the city! we have been meaning to check it out for ages and finally had time to go last week!

catherine was so sweet to open up her shop, luca and bosco, for us on a day it’s usually closed so the kids could play ‘ice cream shop!’ it is their favorite game to play at the playground, in the bathtub, anywhere really… they are always scooping up pretend ice cream cones for me and saying things like “three scoops? one dollar!  two scoops? that’s twenty five dollars!” sometimes i walk away with a pretend scoop of the most inexpensive ice cream cone ever, and sometimes i am definitely taken advantage of. but still, it’s a lot of fun. so playing this game at a real ice cream stand was a dream come true for them! i won’t ever forget eleanor’s face when she realized she was being invited to stand behind the ice cream counter and handed an apron to be a real ice cream scooper.

^^^we started by tasting a sample of each ice cream flavor. how fun would that be to create ice cream flavors? i’d probably be really bad at it, but catherine is thankfully really good at it, because every flavor was amazing (the honey lavender was my favorite!)^^^

^^^sometimes you need a lift down to scoop up some of the good stuff. samson was so proud each time he got a little ice cream into the scooper. “i did it!” he kept saying.^^^

LUCA937289

^^^this was an ice cream sandwich made with pumpkin spice ice cream and brownie for the cookie part.  i definitely ate one and then stole that one from samson after he licked it a few times because it was just too good for him to appreciate and i needed it more. ;) ^^^

^^^i mean, do you see that face? i have a feeling i know what E and S are going to want their first summer jobs to be!^^^

thanks so much for letting us stop by, catherine! and congrats on your new exciting venture!

ps. luca and bosco discarded all of the pans of ice cream E & S had the pleasure of scooping from. :)

  1. Your kids are adorable! It looks like they had a blast and Eleanor is great in the first picture! I am going to try your friends ice cream shop when i’m in the city!

It loos like a grand adventure for your little bits! They are too cute. I am always so impressed with how nice your kids are dressed, you must be a master at laundry:) I seem to get little to no say in my kids choice of wardrobe, and two minutes into an ice-cream trip like this, and whatever craziness they did have on would be ruined!

How fun! I’d love to leave the corporate world an open a little shop. Not ice cream though… I’d eat all the product! But maybe a little thrift shop or something. :)

This is the inspiration I need to get me to make my own ice cream. :)
I actually just put the drum of my ice cream maker in the freezer on Saturday afternoon, but have not been able to think of what flavor to make yet. Pumpkin spice sure sounds delicious at this time of the year though!

  29. Rachel

How charming. These photos are beautiful and the ice cream looks delicious. Might have to make a stop off at our local ice cream shop sometime this week.

  30. Lauren

When I was little, I too played a lot of make-believe ice cream shop – my favorite pretend food were these three scoops of ice cream that you had to balance really carefully on fake cones. It was awesome! Fortunately for me, in high school I got a job at a local ice cream shop and had the pleasure of working there for nearly six years. It was so amazing. My ice cream/gelato obsession is still in full force today.

    Happy scooping, kids!

  31. karen

Eleanor looks like she is in a “Statue of Liberty” pose in the first pic! Brilliant

  32. Kim

What a dream come true for your children! I’m sure they will never forget the fun experience. Melissa & Doug make a super cute ice cream set that my son just loves, I feel as though your little’s would love it too :-)

  33. Carolina

Playing Ice Cream Shop was my favourite game when I was little! Whenever at the beach, me and my little brother would create all different flavours by adding more or less water to the sand scoop! And then selling them to the parents of course. Lovely post :) So refreshing and fun! xx

  34. Anne

too cute! the sheer joy on their faces is priceless!

  35. marie

My son loves to play-pretend ice cream shop too!! Haha I guess all kids love to serve expensive ice-creams to their parents ;)
