week one.

well, we’ve been back in NYC for about a week
and while there have been moments where
i didn’t think we’d survive week 1, here we are!

our house still looks like this….

but we’ve been eating a lot of this
to help ourselves feel better about it….

sister hannah is in town helping us with the littles
while we unpack and get situated.
she has stolen miss eleanor’s heart in the process.
in fact, i’m kind of not sure i’m her favorite anymore.
and like, i’m her mama.

the kids are loving it here.
for eleanor, so many pigeons to chase,
people to wave hello & goodbye to and trash to try and pick up
when i’m not on my mothering A-game.
toddler heaven for this little one.
as for samson, we’ve never seen him more wide eyed.
tall buildings and sky scrapers appear to be his thing.

josh made us our first meal in our new home and it was delicious!
he’s also a happy camper since there is
an aisle dedicated entirely to hummus at our grocery store.
don’t even get him started on the cheese aisle.
if you ever need to find josh, try the grocery store.

we’re really excited to be back.
we love you, new york. and we’ve missed you.

  8. I love that you've returned to NY! As an ex-New Yorker it sometimes seems that returning is never an option, even though I don't necessarily want to close that door completely. Cheers to you and new (old) beginnings!

  9. oh my, that meal looks delicious!
good luck with the unpacking – that's one thing i dislike about moving!

so glad everything is going well. good luck with the rest of the organising! :)

  11. Glad to see that you're settling in and enjoying life back in the Big City.

On a totally unrelated note, I wanted to share a quick story with you. I'm currently living in Zug, Switzerland (just outside of Zurich) for three months with my husband and son. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as well, and at church today I met a young woman who is investigating the Church. When I asked her how she heard about the Church (expecting her to say the missionaries), she said, "well, are you familiar with the Mormon mommy blogs?" She then went on to tell me that she had come across your site and became a regular reader. One day while reading your blog, she noticed your affiliation with the Church. She said that she started to research the Church, contacted the missionaries and got herself a Book of Mormon. This all happened last fall. She then got caught up studying for her Bar exam and would take breaks from studying to read the Book of Mormon (she said it relaxed her), but didn't further explore the Church – until just recently when she finished her exams and ran into the missionaries again. She took that as a sign that she needed to go to church and learn more.

Long story, I know – but I just wanted to share it with you and say thank you for your example and not being afraid to share your beliefs with others. How cool is it that a girl on the other side of the world would be inspired to learn more about the Church because of your blog!

Okay, I now have serious envy over that pasta dish. I may go out of my way this week to try and recreate it…

You really do have a crazily beautiful family. It's so lovely to see. Looking forward to more NYC posts – they're always my favourites.

I can't even express how I feel about what you've done to Kingsley. I had always thought you viewed him as your 'first child' — and I had always admired (so much!) how it seemed that he was just as important before children, as after. I see how terribly wrong I was about how you understand love and family and living beings.

CHOOSING to take an animal into your life is a LIFETIME commitment; you don't get rid of them when they no longer fit in your life, or become 'inconvenient'.

Would you do that to a child? If the answer is no, then you should not do that to ANY creature for whom YOU have CHOSEN to be responsible. Otherwise, I do believe that you'd do the exact same to any living creature in your life; you'd treat them as disposable if it suited your needs. How deplorable. And before you say "children/humans vs animals" — that's not valid. It's the principle of how you treat a LIFE; a living breathing vulnerable creature whom you've taken into your care.

Apparently though, living things are disposable to you if they no longer fit into a new apartment's square footage. If he didn't "fit" into that home, then you should never have chosen it. PERIOD. When you relocate a family – you relocate the ENTIRE family…you don't pick and choose which members fit – and then get rid of the ones who do not.

You've gone from someone I sort of admired – to someone I wouldn't want within 1 inch of my loved ones. Your ethics are a prime example of all that wrong in this world.

My husband and daughter (age 3) are considering moving to NYC at the beginning of the year. Where would YOU recommend living? Where did you look? Any other suggestions? I have visited many, many times (I grew up in Connecticut) but I wonder what living in the city with a toddler would be like. Also, I will be in town in October and I would love to set up a play-date (I know, meeting internet friends can be sorta weird)… but I just want to talk to a MOM about what it is like living in "the big city" :) Please email me at katrina312@gmail.com
