shophouse.

we tried out the new shophouse kitchen over at dupont circle the other week with friends. we hear it’s the new asian spin-off from the people that brought us chipotle. the grilled steak was delicious but overall the meal was far too spicy for us (and we had the mildest sauce.) i suppose we are pretty wimpy though when it comes to spices so we aren’t really the ones you should ask.
we did however enjoy watching eleanor sit on papa’s shoulder while eating her bowl of brown rice. that child knows how to entertain.
  1. I didn't even know this was going to be a thing! Amazing!

Loving all the posts lately–hope you're having a wonderful holiday time with family!

it's not just you! it is really spicy. my husband and i both had trouble with it and i hard three guy next to me talking about how much they love spicy food but had trouble with shophouse. i did try the banh mi over the bowl the second time and the bread helped cut the spice a little.

  3. eleanor is so fashion-forward, especially with those edgy bangs swept to the side. does refinery 29 have a baby version? i think they should contact her, if so. ;)

Eleanor is so beautiful!!!!! Those green beans look super yummy – as I've gotten older my spice factor is about a 2 lol. I would love to give this place a try though!! Happy New Year!

  5. Jessica

I will have to try this place! I LOVE me some spicy foods!

  6. that place looks delicious — maybe if I'm ever in DC :)

  7. Any

and she looks quite sophisticated doing it…love her outfit!

  8. Jillian

Those green beans look so good! I wonder when we'll get it over here in Portland….probably about five years. Ha ha!

  9. i wish i could pull off what eleanor did with such grace. haha too cute.

  10. I love Shophouse and it's conveniently right around the corner from my house. I actually thought my green curry wasn't spicy enough but, hey, to each her own.

  11. Danielle

I'm sure you're told this a hundred times each day, but your daughter's eyes are just stunning! Beautiful family! <3

  12. i think bringing a baby to dinner has it's advantages, and one of them is at least being able to get a cute show when the food isn't as good as hoped :)

  13. Brooke

Cutie patootie strikes again! The food looks so good and y'all look adorable! Can't wait to hear more about sweet baby #2!

  16. I can't believe how big she is already! such a little lady.

can't wait for more updates on the growing bump! Your family is just the neatest family to keep track of. <3 You are one blessed lady. :)

  17. The Egg

    nom nom nom, sounds tasty!

  18. Katz NYC

I like that! I hope they'll open one in NYC soon. I love spicy food. Eleanor is such a cutie pie. Josh must have been a mess after that! :)

  19. Kendra

We need to double date one of these days. You guys do food right! And i'm still so impressed with how Eleanor handles restaurants. Evelyn is never patient enough to even wait for our food to come out! That's why our weekends are full of take-out and red box, which is dandy just the same :)

  20. kelly*

i cannot remember if i posted this before but i can't get over how beautiful eleanor's eyes are! You sure made an adorable baby! (can't wait to see the adorable next one)

Eleanor has better manners than I do sometimes. ;) She's fantastic.

I'd love to try Shophouse since I love all things spicy. Too bad it's all the way in DC! :(

  22. You and your family are seriously "picture perfect" adorable! Love reading your stories! :)

  23. Eleanor has the most incredible eyes I have ever seen!

  24. Your daughter's eyes are incredible!

  25. Alyssa

Kat is right, isn't that you?! What happened to Josh's head? Haha, interesting photoshop job…

My boyfriend and I love Chipotle! This post makes me a bit sad because I'm away from him now and you and Josh look so happy. But it also reminds me of what's important in life – friends and family and having a good time. :] I'll definitely have to eat here sometime soon.

i'm not wimpy about spicy food and my 2 visits to shophouse have been very spicy! with consensus from the friends i brought along. i wish they would fix that, because everything has so much flavor otherwise.

  27. can I just say that probably the reason I read this blog is so I can check out both of your spectacles (they're so cute) and gaze at the food.

thanks for making my day :)

  29. I just love your posts! They always make me smile! i have not heard of shop house in my area, but I do love Chipotle! =)

  30. Ha, that girl loves some rice! How cute. But as far as chipotle – the spicier the better I say!

    love,

    Shalan

  31. i am a wimp when it comes to spicy, too (except with sriracha, i will dump that stuff on anything.) I will have to see if there are any of those around here.

happy new year to you and your little family!

  37. Oh my goodness Eleanor looks like a little girl already… she is growing so fast :)

  38. The vegetables are what makes it so spicy. I've been there a couple times and am still trying to figure out my perfect combo. I love it!

  39. Hi Naomi, I am new to following your blog but, I MUST say, I am OB-sessed. It reads like a good book. Thank you so much for sharing. :) I am truly inspired. It's just me, my husband, and our American Bulldog, GT. I actually just started a blog myself. (I'm like a week in…) I was wondering 2 things… 1. My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to D.C. here in the next few months, (neither of us have ever been), and I was wondering since you live there if you would mind giving us some "must do/must see/must EAT" suggestions. I would really appreciate it. We are from Georgia. Actually, pretty much in Florida. We are near Jacksonville, Florida, near Cumberland Island. And 2. (I am going waaaay back) but, on your April 2009 road trip you had on the most beautiful pair of black boots with maybe a tan buckle on the back… not quite sure. If you don't mind divulging that information to me. I would love to know. I think they are the must gorgeous black boots I've ever seen. Well, Happy New Year to you and your family. Hope to hear from you.

  40. Yum! It's a shame it was too spicy. I have to say, baby E has the prettiest eyes! My goodness, she is going to break hearts.

    Happy New Year!

  41. Joy

i die from the cute…i die!!

  42. Their site is amazing ! your little girl is soo cute by the way :)

  43. Cute. I love your blog.

  44. My husband is now bound to try this place, but unfortunately we live all the way across the country! But it gives us an excuse to go back east where he served his mission. :o)

  45. Kristin

I've really been noticing Eleanor's eyes lately! They're such a bright and clear hazel! So beautiful!

  46. she is gorgeous in that first picture. such beautiful eyes.

  47. melanie

yum!!! taza— how do you eat such delicious food and still stay so thin?????

  48. m.e.

I felt the same about Shop House–too spicy and too many different flavors competing!
